Uric acid in your blood is the culprit. The excessive uric acid that cant be excreted out of your system by your kidneys not only forms kidney stones but also leads to gout by crystallizing itself at the joints. The pain and swelling at your big toe or at heels, ankles, knees and elbows are caused by crystallization of this excess uric acid only. So, its better to expel it out of your body before it gets a chance to crystallize. For this, you have to drink a lot of water. Water in your case or anyone who suffers from gout is the elixir of life! Make it a habit of drinking a glass of water every 30-40 minutes. You can even have other healthy beverages like coconut water, lime juice and fruit juices. If so, you may keep your water intake somewhat low but ensure that whatever amount of fluid you are having during the day, half of it should be water.

/7the Problem Of High Uric Acid

The problem begins when the kidneys are not able to clear out the toxins completely from your bloodstream. The acid starts accumulating which leads to problems like kidney stones and gout. The problem of high uric acid has increased considerably in the recent past decade. This has also flamed many misconceptions. Celebrity Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar recently took to her Instagram handle and shared some useful information related to uric acid. She elaborated on the symptoms and food to eat and not to balance the level of this acid in the body.

First Foods That Can Help

  • There are actually several types of foods that may help protect against gout attacks. These include low-fat dairy foods, complex carbohydrates, coffee, and fruits, especially citrus fruits. You should also be sure to get 12 to 16 cups of fluid daily.
  • You don’t necessarily have to drink only wateryou can choose non-sweetened juice, tea, and coffee too.
  • Any kind of fluid that keeps that blood flowing and urine flowing is a good choice, says Lona Sandon, PhD, RDN, an assistant professor of clinical nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Next up: The foods to avoid. Read on for a list of potentially problematic eats.

Scallops are okay for an occasional indulgence, but you should cut back on themand all types of meat and seafoodduring a flare-up, says Sandon. These animal foods are rich in purines, which your body breaks down into uric acid.

You have a little more freedom in your food choices when your gout is at bay, but its still a good idea to keep meat and seafood intake to a minimum4 to 6 ounces daily at most.

All meat is not created equal when it comes to purine content: White meat is generally better than red.

But it is okay to eat some types of red meat once in a while. Youre a bit better off if your occasional indulgence is beef or pork rather than lamb, says Dr. Zashin.

And lamb chops are a better choice than leg meat.

Organ meats, such as liver, kidneys, and sweetbreads, are a major no-no.

The higher the uric acid level, the more likely gout flare-ups occur. It is important to find out what raises uric acid, especially when it comes to diet, to go a step further.

Fish like salmon have been heavily discussed sources in terms of uric acid contribution. People tend to associate cold-water fish like salmon as one that may increase your uric acid levels.

Aspirin And Diuretics Significantly Increase Gout Risk

Not exactly foods to avoid with gout, but the ingestion of some common medications sharply raise the risk of a gout attack.

Specifically, low doses of aspirin, which one in three middle-aged Americans takes regularly to help prevent heart disease .

The emphasis is on low doses because aspirin has a dual effect on uric acid levels. Very high doses above 3,000 mg promotes excretion of uric acid , whereas low doses prevent excretion .

In a study of 49 elderly patients, just 75 mg of aspirin per day increased blood uric acid levels by 6% within one week. A daily dose of 150 mg kept levels high during the second week, before coming down with 300 mg doses in the third week .

Considering the typical dose for heart disease prevention is 81-325 mg per day, it is no real surprise this dosage is associated with a doubling in gout risk. In fact, even the use of a low-dose aspirin for two consecutive days increases risk of recurrent gout attacks .

Another type of medication known to trigger gout is diuretics. They are typically used to treat high blood pressure and oedema, and if feasible should be discontinued in gout sufferers.

Im by no means recommending you cease your medications if you have gout, but its important to understand the pharmaceutical triggers. First speak with your doctor and closely monitor uric acid levels before making any changes.

And if you need a temporary painkiller, choose paracetamol or ibuprofen. No aspirin.

Chicken Beef And Other Meats Appear To Be Foods To Avoid With Gout

The conversion of purines to uric acid, in theory, causes gout.

Therefore high-purine foods are often suspected to trigger symptoms.

Meat, and to a lesser extent seafood, are prime suspects. This includes all the most common meats like beef, chicken, pork and lamb.

The data available somewhat confirms suspicions.

Each additional daily serving of meat or seafood is associated with a 21% or 7% increased risk of gout, respectively . This implies meat could be three times worse than seafood.

There was another similar study that found even greater risks associated with meat intake, but none for seafood. Overall this suggests seafood is far less of a concern than meat .

For those who already have gout, the impact of meat intake on symptoms is even worse. This is likely due to sharper increases in blood uric acid, as well as poorer clearance by the body .

Therefore if you have a history of gout, it is best to dramatically reduce your meat intake, and seafood as well to a lesser extent. Anecdotal evidence suggests avoiding dark part of salmon, and de-veining prawns/shrimp before eating.

You should also buy your meat direct from the butcher where possible, or at least the better quality choices in the supermarket. Sausages and low-quality ground beef may contain traces of organ meat that can cause big problems .

Summary: Frequent consumption of meat is strongly linked with gout risk. The impact of seafood appears far less severe, but there is a link.

Gout Sufferer Turns To Coconut Oil For Cure

KOTA KINABALU: To people in temperate countries, the coconut tree conjures up images of exotic islands surrounded by sparkling seas and bathed in glorious sunshine.

At times though, a vision comes to mind of a coconut falling on the heads of extollers of such ambiences which can inflict considerable pain.

To the people of Sabah, however, the coconut tree is used for practical reasons and viewed as one of the most useful trees in their life for as long as the tree continues to thrive on their shores.

This is because the coconut tree has many uses. The fronds can be made into attap roofs while the trunks can be cut and fashioned into floors on stilted homes and even walls. The water is a thirst quencher with a pleasant taste and the young kernels are delicious as food.

When a coconut ripens, the white kernel can be scrapped and dry-fried into sweet additives for other foods like dry-fried sago or even ripe bananas. Or it can be squeezed for its milk or santan to be added to food to make it tastier.

The husks can be made into brooms while the discarded shells can be used as firewood and many more.

Curative properties

Coconuts can also be harnessed for their oil usually known as virgin oil. Virgin coconut oil is believed to be effective in bringing relief to people who snore as well as moisturising and beautifying the skin.

Help From Other Fruits And Veggies

Gout Diet : Best & Worst Foods For Gout

Just like the dark colored fruits including cherries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, purple grapes, there are many other fruits that can help you in getting relief from gout. Which fruit can provide gout relief in what ways can be known from the below facts?

I. Apple:There is this acid called malic acid in apple which helps in neutralizing the excessive uric acid in your body. You can go by the old saying- an apple a day keeps gout away! If you can have this apple after a meal, even better. This will help neutralize the uric acid faster to give you relief from pain and inflammation. You can even have apple juice. You may also use homemade apple preserves. Whatever way, you should have apples.

II. Banana: The high amount of potassium and phosphorus in bananas are capable of altering uric acid crystals into a liquid which can be easily flushed out of your system. Bananas also have a high content of vitamin C that can give you relief from pain and swelling. Therefore, you should have at least one to two bananas a day.

III. Grapes: Grapes are alkaline foods and again help in neutralizing uric acid. They also avoid building up of acid and help in eliminating it from a body. However, if you are diabetic, you should consult with your doctor before adding grapes and even bananas to your diet.

Is Coconut Bad For Gout

Coconut isnt bad for gout. It wont spike uric acid and it wont cause a new attack. What I am trying to say is yes, you can consume this fruit occasionally. Just dont expect some major improvements with gout.

Eating coconut on a daily basis isnt recommended for gout sufferers. It will increase your weight eventually and you will be at a higher risk from another flare! The best thing is to add one cup of fruit per week.

When it comes to coconut oil, the situation is slightly different. It also contains fat but in smaller amounts. If you are eager to try new remedies, try this one. Use coconut oil 3 times a day for 10 days and use it during the flares. You have 50% odds that it will help you. If there is no improvement, stop using it.

Coconut and gout are something I like to call partially neutral. There are no clear advantages or improvements, but there are no direct drawbacks. There are indirect issues though. You can consume it occasionally, but frequent usage is something to avoid.

What Is Gout And What Causes It

Before we can look at foods to avoid with gout, it is necessary to briefly understand what it is.

Gout is a form of joint inflammation, caused by excessive uric acid in circulation .

When the bodys natural uric acid threshold is exceeded, painful crystals can form in and around the joints. These crystals trigger the characteristic symptoms and pain.

Not everybody with high uric acid levels will get gout, but those who do always have high uric acid levels. This indicates there are other factors at play, but from a dietary perspective uric acid is the focus.

Excessive uric acid in the blood stream is typically driven by two factors: genetic predisposition and the ingestion of high-purine foods. Obviously, the dietary factor we can control.

When purines we eat are broken down and metabolised by the body, uric acid is formed as a by-product of this process. Its normal and healthy for uric acid to be formed, but excessive amounts are problematic.

Therefore, consuming less purine-rich foods should lower uric acid levels in your blood, lowering gout risk.

At least, in theory.

Its actually not that clear-cut because other nutrients appear to aggravate gout symptoms too

Heres a list of foods to avoid if you have gout, based on real scientific evidence.
