Gout Symptoms & Signs
While high levels of uric acid correlate with gout attacks, this relationship is not linear. In other words, some people have excessive uric acid in their blood but do not manifest any symptoms. We refer to this form as asymptomatic gout.
Conversely, acute gout attacks present with a variety of symptoms related to joints, which last between 3 to 10 days.
Classic symptoms include pain, swelling, and warmth of the skin above the joint. Once the attack subsides, you will not have any symptoms.
Untreated gout can become chronic in nature, especially when the underlying mechanism is still present. Additionally, the hard lumps can deposit around the skin, joints, and soft tissues, which permanently damages the structure of the articulations.
With all of that said, the prompt treatment of acute gout is primordial to prevent chronic disease.
Health Conditions Responsible For Gout Flare Ups:

If you are visiting the doctor or have fallen sick or are going to the hospital for a surgery, make sure that you tell your doctor that you have gout.

Diuretics Lower Blood Pressure But Raise Uric Acid Level
Diuretics, or water pills, are medications that increase urination to remove salt and water in the body. They can treat mild hypertension because less salt and water lowers blood volume.
However, diuretics increase uric acid levels and the risk of gout. Excessive depletion of water, or dehydration, can leave a high concentration of toxins like uric acid in the blood.
Remember to stay well hydrated when taking diuretics. If you are on diuretics and experiencing more gout flares, it would be wise to discuss alternative medication with your doctor.

After this, corticosteroid injection would be given for numbing the area and a corticosteroid pill or injection would be given to decrease the inflammations.
How Will Gout Affect Me
Attacks can vary from person to person. Some people only have an attack every few years, while others have attacks every few months.
Without medication attacks tend to happen more often and other joints can become affected.
Having high urate levels and gout for a long time can lead to other health problems, including:
- narrowing of the arteries – which can lead to an increased risk of stroke or heart attacks or other heart problems
- osteoarthritis, which occurs when the urate crystals and hard tophi cause joint damage.
- an increased risk of developing kidney disease or worsening of the condition if you already have it
- kidney stones
- an increased risk of some cancers, especially prostate cancer
- mental health problems, including depression
- underactive thyroid
- erectile dysfunction in men.
If you take medication to lower your urate levels, and have a healthy diet and lifestyle, most of the damage and complications caused by gout can be stopped.
Treatments for gout are incredibly successful. There are two main parts to treating gout, which are:

What To Do After A Gout Flare
While its possible to have an isolated gout attack, normally once gout strikes youll need prolonged therapy to manage it, says Dr. Saag. If you dont take regular uric-acid lowering medication or find another way to get your uric acid levels down cutting back on alcohol, losing weight, and cutting back on high-purine foods may make a difference over time you will likely experience shorter intervals between gout flares, he explains. Gout ultimately becomes a chronic arthritis, and it can be quite disabling.
Take Caution With Supplements For Gout
As for the many supplements and other purported home remedies available for gout, including turmeric and bromelain, there is no significant evidence backing them up as of now, and theres no adequate evidence showing that supplements have any effect even comparable to that of medicines.
From my point of view, says Dr. Fields, the home remedy concept to gout is often harmful because it keeps patients from taking medications that we know are effective.

Elevating The Affected Joints
Gout can cause pain and swelling, especially in the feet, hands, knees, and ankles.
One way to reduce swelling is by elevating the affected joints. This encourages blood and fluid to move away from the joint and back toward the heart.
A person can also use an ice-pack in combination with elevation to reduce their gout symptoms.
When Is Surgery Considered For Gout
The question of surgery for gout most commonly comes up when a patient has a large clump of urate crystals , which is causing problems. This may be if the tophus is on the bottom of the foot, and the person has difficulty walking on it, or on the side of the foot making it hard to wear shoes. An especially difficult problem is when the urate crystals inside the tophus break out to the skin surface. This then can allow bacteria a point of entry, which can lead to infection, which could even track back to the bone. Whenever possible, however, we try to avoid surgery to remove tophi. The problem is that the crystals are often extensive, and track back to the bone, so there is not a good healing surface once the tophus is removed. In some rare cases, such as when a tophus is infected or when its location is causing major disability, surgical removal may be considered.
Since it is hard to heal the skin after a tophus is removed, a skin graft may be needed. For this reason, we often try hard to manage the tophus medically. If we give high doses of medication to lower the urate level, such as allopurinol, over time the tophus will gradually reabsorb. In severe cases, we may consider using the intravenous medication pegloticase , since it lowers the urate level the most dramatically, and can lead to the fastest shrinkage of the tophus.
