We all eat nuts and we all have a favorite nut, like I personally love almonds and usually eat mostly almonds although I like to eat peanuts from time to time and cashews. But I usually buy the big bag of almonds at Costco and mix it up with dried cherries which you know is great for your gout. Kinda create my own trail mix that way instead of buying nutbars mixed with dried fruit at the store and has many additives and lots of sugar which is not healthy for us, just buy your own raw nuts and mix them yourself with some dried fruit for a healthier snack. I also love and I mean love peanut butter. I buy it natural of course and love to spread it over 2 slices of 100% whole grain wheat bread for breakfast. So are nuts healthy for us gout sufferers?

The answer. Yes they are!

Can they trigger a gout attack?

Highly unlikely.

Nuts are high in fat and are a high calorie food but dont contain much in purines. On average depending on the nut, they will contain less than 50 mg per 100 grams. Peanuts have about 79 mg of purines per 100 grams and almonds as well as pecans are at the lower end of the scale with about only 10 mg of purines per 100 grams.

Limit Servings To 2 Times Per Week

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center recommends limiting your servings of oatmeal to 2 times per week if you have gout or are at higher risk for gout due to a family history of the condition.

However, dont eliminate oatmeal altogether, as it has other health benefits. Its fiber content helps to promote feelings of fullness and regular bowel movements. According to the Mayo Clinic, it may even reduce risks for high blood pressure.

Which Foods Are Beneficial For Gout Sufferers

One of the best fruits to eat when suffering from gout is cherries. Research has shown that consuming about 250 grams of cherries each day lessens or eliminates gout attacks by reducing blood uric acid levels. Drinking cherry juice may be just as beneficial to gout sufferers as eating cherries. If you find it hard to drink so many glasses of water each day, substitute cherry juice for 2 or 3 glasses of water instead.

Dark berries may contain chemicals that lower uric acid and reduce inflammation. All berries that are dark red or blue contain flavonoids and anthocyanidins, beneficial antioxidants that may enhance the collagen content of tendons and cartilages surrounding affected joints.

Tofu which is made from soybeans may be a better choice than meats. I like to cook it with basmati rice which is lower on the Glycemic Index and add various vegetables like broccoli, carrots, dried tomatoes etc

Fatty acids found in certain fish such as salmon, flax or olive oil, or nuts may possess some anti-inflammatory benefits. The famous Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids that are soooo good for usI use olive oil every day and my doctor has personally told me when doing my blood tests couple of years back, that he has never seen HDL cholesterol so high in years in any of his patients which may protect you from a heart attack and/or cardiovascular disease including arterial plaque buildup.

Aspirin And Diuretics Significantly Increase Gout Risk

Not exactly foods to avoid with gout, but the ingestion of some common medications sharply raise the risk of a gout attack.

Specifically, low doses of aspirin, which one in three middle-aged Americans takes regularly to help prevent heart disease .

The emphasis is on low doses because aspirin has a dual effect on uric acid levels. Very high doses above 3,000 mg promotes excretion of uric acid , whereas low doses prevent excretion .

In a study of 49 elderly patients, just 75 mg of aspirin per day increased blood uric acid levels by 6% within one week. A daily dose of 150 mg kept levels high during the second week, before coming down with 300 mg doses in the third week .

Considering the typical dose for heart disease prevention is 81-325 mg per day, it is no real surprise this dosage is associated with a doubling in gout risk. In fact, even the use of a low-dose aspirin for two consecutive days increases risk of recurrent gout attacks .

Another type of medication known to trigger gout is diuretics. They are typically used to treat high blood pressure and oedema, and if feasible should be discontinued in gout sufferers.

Im by no means recommending you cease your medications if you have gout, but its important to understand the pharmaceutical triggers. First speak with your doctor and closely monitor uric acid levels before making any changes.

And if you need a temporary painkiller, choose paracetamol or ibuprofen. No aspirin.

One study found that the consumption of apples or oranges the most popular fruits in this study was linked with an increased risk of gout compared to those who consume less than one serving of fruit per month. No link was found with other fruits however .

While most fruits are very low in fructose, a few are very high. Frequent consumption of these could theoretically causes problems for gout sufferers.

    Nuts are generally high in calories, so overindulging may add hundreds of calories a day to your diet, potentially leading to weight gain and increased cholesterol. And, remember, being overweight is a major risk factor for gout.
