This type of acid will decrease the levels of the uric acid and literally protect you from gout attacks. Furthermore, the acid is great for the liver and it also prevents forming kidney stones. Believe me, you definitely want to avoid them, simply because they will cause a lot of pain and plenty of issues you dont want in your life.

The situation known as a gout attack occurs in the most cases when the pH level of your body is < 7. The condition is known as acidosis and it is a severe condition which is mainly responsible for gout. Lemon juice, when consumed properly, will create or increase the ingredients known as calcium carbonate. They will literally reduce the levels of uric acids and they will protect you from the gout attacks. Even if you add lots of juice to your lime water, good old H2O is still the most important nutrient youll get in your glass, says Blake. Water is a nutrient, and people dont remember that, but it is.

Staying hydrated is essential for overall health. We know that people need to drink fluids to stay well hydrated and while moderate and smaller portions of sugar-sweetened beverages can be included in a healthy diet, finding creative ways for people to drink more water is important, Prest says.

Water requirements vary by age, gender, and activity level, so its difficult to make blanket recommendations on how much to drink, she adds. She recommends keeping an eye on urine color. If its a pale yellow to almost clear, then youre probably drinking enough water, she says. If its darker yellow, it could be more of an indication of not drinking enough.

Helpful Tips For Preventing A Painful Gout Flare

Gout is an extremely painful form of arthritis that tends to locate first or primarily in your big toe, but it can affect any of your joints. You get gout when you eat foods that are high in purines, an organic compound. Purines are found in red meat, shellfish, alcohol, and other food items that some might consider luxuries which is why gout was once stereotypically considered a disease of kings.

When your body processes purines, it breaks them down into uric acid. When you have too much uric acid in your system, it collects in your joint and forms sharp uric crystals. So, when you complain that you feel like youre being stabbed with needles, youre not far from the truth.

Dr. Kimberly Bolling, an expert clinician with a self-named practice in Bowie, Maryland, knows that you dont have to be rich to have gout. But you do have to be richly aware of what youre eating and drinking if you want to avoid a painful flare. Here are some tips:

Kidney Stone Prevention: What You Eat And Drink Can Make A Difference

There are no guarantees when it comes to kidney stones. But drinking lots of water, and a little lime or lemon juice, can lower your odds.

Just ask anyone whos had a painful kidney stone: If theres something you can do to avoid getting one, do it.

University of Minnesota Health Clinical Dietitian Angie Moeding, RD, has seen many patients with kidney stones. To avoid becoming one of them, she recommends that most people who have not been diagnosed with a kidney stone consume 64 ounces of fluidequal to about eight glasses of watereach day. If you have ever been diagnosed with a kidney stone, you should drink more fluids and limit your sodium.

Drinking plenty of water can prevent the formation of kidney stones. And it comes with a bevy of other benefits, including better-looking skin, higher energy levels and easier weight control.

That needn’t all be water, of course, but theres nothing quite like water to keep your urine dilutedand dilution helps prevent stones. If you want to vary your fluid intake, Moeding also recommends lemon/lime and orange juices containing citrate, which has been shown to help prevent kidney stone formation.

We recommend half a cup of 100-percent lemon or lime juice daily. Two cups of orange juice will also provide adequate citrate. However, orange juice should be alternated with the lemon or lime juice due to the high sugar content in the orange juice.

How Lemon Juice Works For Gout

Studies have shown that lemons as well as tangerines, oranges and clementines are highly effective at neutralizing uric acid in the body, thus reducing the risk of gout attacks. So, if you have gout, you should definitely consider this natural remedy

When your body reaches highly acidic levels, uric acid begins to crystallize in the joints and can cause an attack of gout. Even worse, this crystallization can occur in the kidneys producing kidney stones which you really want to avoid, believe me!

The best way to address this is to maintain your body slightly on the alkaline side. Lemon juice can help do that. It stimulates the production of calcium carbonate which helps to neutralize uric acid, thereby decreasing acidity and moving to a more alkaline state.

Heres what Dr. Zina Kroner D.O. wrote on Dr. Ronal Hoffmans Intelligent Medicine website

Uric acid crystallizes and forms stones in an acidic environment. One way to prevent this is by alkalinizing the urine or making it more basic. Urine alkalinization can be achieved with administration of potassium citrate or sodium bicarbonate as directed by your physician. Lemon juice stimulates the formation of calcium carbonate, which neutralizes acids like uric acid. Therefore, drinking freshly squeezed lemon in a glass of water after meals can prevent a gouty attack. Baking soda also can help alkalinize the urine.

The Causes And Symptoms Of Gout

Gout is a painful form of arthritis, caused by a condition known as hyperuricemia, which means that there is excess uric acid in your body.

Your body makes uric acid when it breaks down purines. Purines are one of the by-products of protein digestion and are found in your body and in the foods you eat.

When there is too much uric acid in the body, crystals of uric acid can build up in your bodys joints and soft tissues.

Gout is caused by the deposit of needle-like urate crystals in your joints. Gout sufferers experience swelling and pain in joints such as the ankles, knees, feet, wrists, and elbows. Painful flare-ups are often concentrated in the big toe, a symptom known as podagra.

Flare-ups can last a few days when symptoms first start to appear, but often these flare-ups will become progressively longer.

Gout can lead to painful kidney stones, and if left untreated it can cause permanent damage to your joints and kidneys.

    Properties And Health Benefits

Lemon is a citrus fruit that’s rich in vitamin C and citric acid. Lemon water is simply water that contains at least a few drops of lemon juice. A standard-sized lemon yields about 3.5 tablespoons or 50 grams of lemon juice. A cup of lemon water containing the juice of a whole lemon provides around 20% of your recommended daily dose of vitamin C.

You can drink lemon water hot or cold, and some people choose to add mint or cucumber slices to their lemon water for a little extra nutrition and flavor.

Lemon water may help reduce some symptoms of arthritis when consumed alongside your normal medicine routine.

Vitamin C specifically helps arthritis in the following ways:

    • Promoting collagen synthesis and tendon repair.
    • Aids in maintaining the immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which your immune system attacks healthy cells, which causes inflammation in your joints.
    • It is an antioxidant that protects against free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells. These free radicals are thought to be involved in illnesses like arthritis.

While the citric acid in citrus fruits doesn’t help treat gout, the vitamin C — also known as ascorbic acid — found in those same fruits might be an effective treatment. A study published in “Arthritis and Rheumatism” in 2005 found that people supplementing with 500 milligrams of vitamin C each day for two months experienced a significant reduction in their blood levels of uric acid. Additionally, a 2009 “Archives of Internal Medicine” study determined that men who have a higher intake of vitamin C are less likely to develop gout as they age 5.

What Are The Symptoms Of Gout

If you think you are suffering from gout, how can you be sure? One of the tell-tale signs of gout is excruciating swelling and pain in the big toe, usually resultant of an injury. Gout may affect other joints intermittently, though, most often it affects the joints in the foot and knee. If left untreated, gout can become a chronic condition.

If you do not treat gout symptoms, your body may produce something called tophi which are little crystals that form disfiguring lumps near your joints and can also produce painful kidney stones.

Why Lemon Juice May Be Helpful

Lemon juice may help balance uric acid levels because it helps make the body more alkaline. This means it slightly raises the pH level of blood and other fluids. Lemon juice also makes your urine more alkaline.

According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, this happens because drinking lemon juice causes your body to release more calcium carbonate. The calcium mineral bonds to uric acid and breaks it down to water and other compounds. This makes your blood less acidic and lowers uric acid levels in the body.
