Worst Foods & Beverages For Gout

  • At the top of the list of what to avoid is booze. Beer and liquor readily convert to uric acid and they slow down its elimination. Studies have shown mixed results about whether wine is OK in moderation.
  • Drinking sugary beverages, such as sodas sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, fruit juices or other sugar-containing drinks, is associated with gout. Notable exception: cherries, especially tart cherries, may be beneficial for gout.
  • Go light on red meats, particularly organ meats like liver, tongue and sweetbreads, which are all high in purines. Also avoid or minimize the amount of bacon, venison and veal you eat.
  • Maybe surprising: Turkey and goose are very high in purines. Chicken and duck are better bets.
  • Some seafoods also are high in purines, including anchovies, sardines, mussels, scallops, crabs, lobsters, oysters and shrimp.
  • Some vegetables are on the watch list, too: Consider cutting back on mushrooms, asparagus and spinach but veggies of any kind are much less likely to trigger a gout flare than alcohol or organ meats.

How Cinnamon Can Help In Gout

In the 2018 study, a randomized double-blind clinical trial, researchers at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences in Iran divided 36 women with RA into two groups: For eight weeks, one group received four capsules of 500 milligrams of cinnamon powder daily the other received a placebo daily.

At the beginning, study participants were measured for:

  • Fasting blood sugar
  • Serum levels of C-reactive protein
  • Blood pressure
  • Tumor necrosis factor alpha

These measures were taken again at the end of the eighth week. Results: a significant decrease of serum levels of C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and diastolic blood pressure in the cinnamon group compared with the placebo group. No significant changes were found for fasting blood sugar, lipid profile, or liver enzymes.

The study group and placebo group were both very small in number, making generalizations of the outcomes less meaningful, but a trend was certainly evident, says Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, CDCES, the author of Doctors Detox Diet.

Fructose, one of the components of sugar, is held as one of the dietary causative agents of metabolic syndrome and obesity.

Both these conditions serve as a risk factor for obesity.

Zhang et. al showed in an animal study that curcumin reduced the levels of blood urate and increased the excretion of uric acid via urine.

Curcumin regulated the activity of proteins related to uric acid transport and inhibited the activity of certain biochemical pathways in order to improve kidney function.

Curcumins antioxidantaction may help lower uric acid levels.

Researchers concluded that curcumin can be a functional ingredient that offers protection from fructose consumption associated hyperuricaemia or increased uric acid levels.

Xanthine oxidase is one of the enzymes involved in uric acid formation. A study suggests that curcumin can inhibit the action of this enzyme thereby preventing uric acid formation while some researchers have found that curcumin may not affect this enzyme.

Coming to a concrete study in humans, this one focuses on curcumin supplementation in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Poor metabolic health and increased consumption of purine-rich foods elevate uric acid levels in the blood.

This study published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology, 2016 showed that 1000mg of curcumin per day for 8 weeks lowers cholesterol levels and uric acid levels in individuals suffering from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Cinnamon Acts An Anti

Various studies have indicated that cinnamaldehyde present in cinnamon inhibits the activation of inflammation causing factors such as arachidonic acids thereby acting as an effective anti-inflammatory agent .

Lee et. al. reported that 2hydroxycinnamaldehyde extracted from Cinnamomum bark inhibits the production of nitric oxide which further inhibits the activation of nuclear factor kappa which initiates inflammation.

In cases where inflammation is caused by immune cells, cinnamon suppresses the release of inflammatory cytokines such as interferons.

What does this mean? Research has shown many evidences wherein cinnamon has proved to be useful in inflammatory diseases such as arthritis because it acts as an effective anti-inflammatory agent.

Cinnamon Has Many Healing Benefits

Cinnamon is the brown bark of the cinnamon tree, an Asian evergreen tree. The bark is peeled off, dried, and allowed to form a roll – the common “cinnamon stick” that we know today. There are actually four types of cinnamon. Cinnamomum zeylanicum, more commonly known as “Ceylon”, is considered true cinnamon. The others are relatives of this variety, and are known as Chinese cassia or Indonesian cinnamon. They all come from the same tree and are similar in taste, but Ceylon has a slightly richer and sweeter taste. Most of the cinnamon commonly consumed is the less expensive cassia variety.

Cinnamon is a source of manganese, iron, calcium, and fiber and contains cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, and cinnamyl alcohol, substances that work as antioxidants in the body. In fact, cinnamon’s unique healing abilities come mainly from these three components in the essential oils found in its bark, as well as from some other volatile substances.

Health Benefits

Traditionally, cinnamon is valued for its warming and cleansing qualities. It has been used to provide relief from the onset of a cold or flu, especially when mixed in a tea with some fresh ginger. Gargling with equal amounts of honey and cinnamon mixed in hot water has been used to battle bad breath, and many people chew on a stick of fresh cinnamon daily for overall health preservation.

Uric Acid And Hyperuricemia

The balance between the excretion and production of uric acidby the body has been shown to be particularly important and, for this reason, efforts should be made to maintain its homeostasis and not to neglect the monitoring of its levels .

In particular, hyperuricemia, caused by an imbalance between the production and excretion of uric acid, is a metabolic disorder and the pathogenic basis for the development of gout, while it is closely related to cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease and metabolic syndrome. The latter may include obesity, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes mellitus .

The prevalence of gout and hyperuricemia has increased significantly in recent decades and, in particular, in developed countries . The sheer number of possible complications associated with hyperuricemia can lead to significantly higher health care costs. Therefore, it is extremely important to understand the above pathological condition and, ideally, to prevent its occurrence .

Uric acid is the end product in purine catabolism and is produced through the catalytic activities of xanthine oxidase . XOD is an enzyme responsible for converting hypoxanthine to xanthine, which is then converted to uric acid .

Therapy Of Cinnamon Decoction Using Honey In Reducing Gout

Yeti Nurhayati, Tresia Umarianti

Background: Gout is an antioxidant, the final product that is produced from the metabolism/ breakdown of purines, but if in excessive amounts in the blood, it will experience crystallization and can cause gout. Giving cinnamon extract to male white rats with hyperuricemia has the effect of reducing uric acid levels, because the extract of cinnamon contains Polyphenols namely Sinamldehid which is high enough to be a source of antioxidant compounds which can inhibit Xanthine Oxidase Enzine. This study aimed to analyze the therapy of dekokta cinnamon with honey to reduce uric acid for people with gout.

Subjects andMethod:This was a quasi experiment with pre and post-test design. The study was conducted in Gambirsari Community Health Center, Kadipiro Subdistrict, Mojosongo, Surakarta, Central Java, in May 2018. A sample of of 50 people with gout sufferers were selected by quota sampling and divided into 2 groups. The treatment group of 25 people received cinnamon decoction with honey with a concentration of 15%. The therapy was carried out for 1 week with a dose of once a day. In the control group, Allopurinol 100 mg was given for 1 week, with a dose of once a day. The data were analyzed by Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney est.

Results:Uric acid in decoction cinnamon with honey group was lower than in control group and it was statistically significant .
