The production is based on a mixture between non-porous clay and porous chalk. These days you can find epsom salt literally anywhere and in most grocery stores.

High sugar drinks may not be the only stimulant of gout flare ups.

Certain fruits which are a natural source of fructose have also been linked with gout.

This is a highly contentious area, because several studies have linked higher fruit intake with less incidence of gout. This is probably due to their high fibre content .

And unlike fruit juice and other sugar-sweetened drinks, whole fruits are nutritious and generally good for health. There is no disputing this.

However, if you continually have gout attacks despite cutting out alcohol and sugar-sweetened drinks then Im not convinced a large amount of fruits are safe for you. Especially if you are overweight and eat a Western diet.

So cutting back on certain very high-fructose fruits is like a Plan D, if you will.

The link comes back to fructose, which stimulates uric acid production in a similar manner to alcohol. Fructose is naturally found in fruit and honey.

One study found that the consumption of apples or oranges the most popular fruits in this study was linked with an increased risk of gout compared to those who consume less than one serving of fruit per month. No link was found with other fruits however .

While most fruits are very low in fructose, a few are very high. Frequent consumption of these could theoretically causes problems for gout sufferers.

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy and reduced in fats and saturated fats , designed decades ago to reduce high blood pressure, also appears to significantly lower uric acid, the causative agent of gout. Further, the effect was so strong in some participants that it was nearly comparable to that achieved with drugs specifically prescribed to treat gout, a new study led by Johns Hopkins researchers shows.

The findingsderived from a randomized clinical trialcould offer an effective, safe and sustainable dietary approach to lower uric acid and possibly prevent gout flare-ups in those with mild to moderate disease and who cant or dont want to take gout drugs.

Dietary excesses, such as consuming a lot of red meat and alcohol, have long been associated with gout, a disease marked by high levels of uric acid in the blood and whose causes remain somewhat of an enigma despite centuries of investigation. The Hopkins researchers noted that while symptoms of gout outbreaks severe inflammation and sharp pain in the joints, particularly the base of the big toe have been linked to elevated uric acid, its been unclear exactly what type of diet might lower uric acid and decrease the risk of flare-ups.

The Dietary Approaches To Stop Hypertension diet, focuses on fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy foods and reducing the amount of saturated fat, total fat and cholesterol, while boosting consumption of whole grains, lean meats, fish, nuts and beans.

In short, this diet restricts many of the foods and nutrients that trigger gout flares.

Compared to participants who consumed a typical American diet, those who followed the DASH diet for 30 days had uric acid levels about 0.35 mg/dL lower. The drop was more pronounced in people with uric levels greater than 7 mg/dL at baseline. In this group the average decrease was more than 1 mg/dL.

The connection to sodium comes into play with the DASH diet in the finding that participants who followed the strict diet and who consumed higher sodium levels saw practically no effect on uric acid, compared to those who followed the DASH diet and consumed low levels of sodium.

As a result, our findings do not support the idea that one should consume excessive or even the typical levels of sodium in the American diet to lower uric acid, the researchers conclude.

Treating A Gout Attack

As is true for many painful conditions, the first-line treatment for a gout attack is taking one of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , such as diclofenac, ibuprofen, or indomethacin. For people who can’t take NSAIDs, a drug called colchicine is an alternative. It’s been used for centuries maybe even longer specifically for gout. The trouble with colchicine is its side effects, especially the copious diarrhea. If neither an NSAID nor colchicine is an option, then gout attacks can be treated with an oral corticosteroid, such as prednisone, or with corticosteroid injections into the joints.

How Can An Attack Of Gout Be Treated

The management of an acute attack of gout is very different from the prevention of subsequent attacks.

Treatments used for prevention, such as allopurinol can actually make things worse if given during an attack, and so need to be held back until the attack has resolved for several weeks.

There are a number of measures that can help resolve an attack of gout. See Table 2 for summary of treatment strategies for acute gout. One principle is that treatment for an attack of gout should be instituted quickly, since quick treatment can often be rewarded with a quick improvement.

If an attack of gout is allowed to last more than a day or so before treatment is started, the response to treatment may be much slower.
