Does Baking Soda Help Gout

Reduce Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms :

Gout and Baking Soda

Gout and rheumatoid arthritis are two separate diseases. Some of their principal symptoms, such as joint pain and swelling, do, however, overlap.

RA is an autoimmune disease in which the body destroys its own organs as a result of an overactive immune system.

According to a 2018 study published in the Journal of Immunology, baking soda helped guide immune cells to work on lowering inflammation rather than stimulating it.

In other words, baking soda aided the bodys anti-inflammatory reaction, causing it to emit a relaxing signal rather than an emergency attack signal. This suggests that if sodium bicarbonate can aid with RA, baking soda may also help with gout.

Gout attacks are caused by uric acid crystallization in the joints. The crystals are perceived as a threat by the immune system, prompting it to start an immunological reaction against them.

The resultant inflammation produces swelling, skin reddening, and incapacitating discomfort. Uric acid crystals can form hard nodules called tophi under the skin, on the surface of joints, or on cartilage when untreated gout progresses to advanced, chronic gout.

Baking soda may help prevent autoimmune illnesses like gout and RA if used on a daily basis. Autoimmune diseases are conditions in that the body develops antibodies that attack its own tissues, causing them to deteriorate or even die.

Using Baking Soda For Treating Gout

Maybe some of you believe that baking soda used for treating gout is a new alternative, but actually, it isnt. As a matter of fact, baking soda was used for treating gout in the 19th century in the United Kingdom. There, doctors discovered that baking soda can raise levels of pH of human blood and reduce the levels of uric acid. Even today this method is commonly used and it is one of the most common there are.

Before I say anything else, it is mandatory to have a consultation with your doctor as soon as possible, if you are planning to use baking soda.

Gout And Baking Soda Does It Work

Dangerous Baking Soda For Gout

If you suffer from gout, baking soda might just be one of the natural remedies that can help you. It helps increases the bodys pH level making the uric acid more soluble so that it can easily be flushed out by the kidneys.

As a result, the body restores its natural alkaline balance allowing the blood to hold more uric acid without crystallizing. It not only helps lessen gout attacks but it also minimizes the work the kidney needs to do since uric acid is more readily excreted.

So What Does It Actually Do

Some of us and our bodies are acidic and the some are alkaline and this usually measured using a pH scale ranging from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral and anything below 7 is considered acidic and anything above is obviously considered alkaline. So what baking soda actually does is, it increases the blood and body fluids Ph level which may turn your uric acid more soluble, which in turn may make it easier to flush out of the kidneys, restoring this natural alkaline balance.

If you already have chronic kidney disease, great news. One study found that patients who have it were able to slow down its progression after taking baking soda.

The blood may be able to hold more uric acid without crystallizing which causes your gout attack. By alkalizing your blood, it may also alkalize your urine making your uric acid more readily excreted avoiding kidney stones made from uric acid and remember to use pH strips to test the alkalinity of your urine. . You can also try AlkaHydra Water Sachets with Coral Calcium from Gout and You, which may help you alkalize your bodys pH levels as well! The best way to alkalize your body is through proper diet which we will discuss in a future post in greater detail.

Inconsistency With Regard To Spinach

In the article, under the Prevention section, spinach is simultaneously recommended and avoided:

1) Avoiding alcohol, high-purine foods, such as meat, fish, dry beans , mushrooms, spinach,

2) juicing a combination of carrot and spinach can greatly reduce the pains of gout as well as lower euric acid levels.

I don’t know which one is correct, though.

Its quite possible that the juice of spinach helps it, but something in the leafy part makes it worse? Someone can possibly provide clarity on that, if none is forth coming we should probably remove it until its cleared up.–Crossmr 22:49, 31 August 2006
The Oxalic acid in spinach raises the blood pH and drives the uric acid into crystal form. Oxalic acid is harder to remove from the blood than other compounds, so it can be troublesome. I can’t even glance at it in the vegetable aisle.Msml 15:42, 20 July 2009
Further research seems to indicate that spinach is a food to be avoided and that the compounds involved are soluble . I’m going to remove spinach juice from the remedy list. among many other articles–Randomthoughts 18:11, 6 September 2006
I may add my personal experience. Research data notwithstanding, after eating any of asparagus. cauliflower. mushrooms. or spinach, I am sure to develop gout. LoopTel 23:55, 3 June 2008

The page, under heading “Diet”, list Vitamin C as a positive force in treating and preventing gout. Then it is later, under “Other Approaches, Foods to avoid”, listed as something to avoid.Skafkas 03:42, 25 October 2007

Heh. Good catch. Actually, I think that should be read as “it is believed that diuretics might have a role in causing the disease, and so one should avoid the dehydrating effects of Vitamin C. Under the guidance of a doctor, Vitamin C might be an effective treatment, presumably along with a hydration therapy.” I’m getting really close to weasel words and WP’s prohibition on giving medical advice, though. I adore coffee, but have been told that caffeine is a diuretic and as such should be avoided as you need as much fluid in your body to flush out the uric acid. Great Article But Needs Image

This is a really good article. I’d put it up for peer review as the first step to featured status, but I’m pretty sure the response would be: needs a picture.

Baking Soda Vs Baking Powder

I am not a doctor. I do get gout attacks about once every month to two months, but honestly I’m not sure, because as soon as I feel anything in my foot that feels like it might be a bout coming on, I mix a half teaspoon of ALUMINUM FREE baking POWDER in a glass of warm water, drink it and the twinge quickly dissappears. I don’t know all of the chemical differences between baking powder and soda, but I was told by a gout sufferer that he used Rumford baking POWDER . I do know one major difference among brands of Baking POWDER – some have aluminum compounds and some do not. Rumford does not, and that is what I am told makes the difference. That said, I am now learning that this can help some with lesser degrees of gout, but even for those folks it is not a long-term fix as baking powder has a very high percentage of sodium which can raise blood pressure and do significant damage to many critical body parts. So, bottom line – check with your doctor. When I told mine recently that I was using this baking powder solution, he said that chemically it makes sense as it will break down the uric acid crystals associated with gout and that cause the pain you feel. He said he had not heard of this remedy, but what bothers me is he didn’t ask me how frequently I use it. Nor did he warn me of the high sodium content. So – quiz your doctor. If he or she is unaware or underinformed, ask them to look into it and get you some answers that incorporate your situation.
