Does Sweet Tea Cause Gout

The Gout Diet Philosophy

Sweet Tea Starter

Because gout occurs when your body breaks down purine, the primary goal of the gout diet is to reduce purine in your body. While you naturally produce a little bit of this chemical, a great deal comes from food and drink. So, its important to include foods that control uric acid and avoid those that contain it.

Although this may sound restrictive at first, its not complicated, and it generally follows the rules of healthy eating for everyone: Eat moderate portions, cut back on alcohol and sugar, eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and maintain a healthy weight.

Fight Gout With Good Balance

Since an acidic body sets the stage for flare-ups, aim to maintain a neutral pH level. Ask your doctor for advice on diet and research the pH of different foods, then choose those foods that are more alkaline, such as:

  • Most vegetables
  • Many high-fiber orchard fruits, like apples, pears and nectarines
  • Plant-based protein
  • Fermented dairy products and probiotic cultures

You may want to buy some pH testing strips at your local pharmacy theyre cheap and easy to use, and will help you maintain a healthy blood balance to ward off gout attacks. Remember, you dont necessarily have to eliminate everything sweet from your diet, but its imperative that you choose the right sorts of sweet and eat it in the right amounts. Get used to reading labels and keep a food diary to track flare-ups, which will help you to pinpoint problem foods and fine-tune your diet.

When You Drink Iced Tea Every Day You Could Lose Weight

When it comes to the health benefits of iced tea, researchers usually focus on black tea. But one type of herbal tea may actually be more helpful when it comes to losing weight.

A 2018 study published in the journal Frontiers in Physiology found that drinking herbal tea made from yerba mate, a plant native to South America , encouraged fat oxidation. Kathryn Schwab, a health and wellness researcher at Tons of Goodness, explained, ” are in a constant state of turnover, meaning that fat is continuously entering or exiting the cell … Fatty acids released into the bloodstream can then be burned for energy. When fat is oxidized, this results in weight loss.” Interestingly, the 2018 study found that iced yerba mate was more effective at fat oxidation than hot yerba mate.

If you’re one of the 56.4 percent of American women trying to lose weight, you may want to swap out your regular iced black tea for an iced yerba mate.

Frequent Consumption Of Certain Fruits May Trigger Recurrent Gout Attacks

Got Apple Peels? Make Tea!

High sugar drinks may not be the only stimulant of gout flare ups.

Certain fruits which are a natural source of fructose have also been linked with gout.

This is a highly contentious area, because several studies have linked higher fruit intake with less incidence of gout. This is probably due to their high fibre content .

And unlike fruit juice and other sugar-sweetened drinks, whole fruits are nutritious and generally good for health. There is no disputing this.

However, if you continually have gout attacks despite cutting out alcohol and sugar-sweetened drinks then Im not convinced a large amount of fruits are safe for you. Especially if you are overweight and eat a Western diet.

So cutting back on certain very high-fructose fruits is like a Plan D, if you will.

The link comes back to fructose, which stimulates uric acid production in a similar manner to alcohol. Fructose is naturally found in fruit and honey.

One study found that the consumption of apples or oranges the most popular fruits in this study was linked with an increased risk of gout compared to those who consume less than one serving of fruit per month. No link was found with other fruits however .

While most fruits are very low in fructose, a few are very high. Frequent consumption of these could theoretically causes problems for gout sufferers.

Organ Meats Are Extremely High In Purines And Should Also Be Avoided

Organ meats, known as Offal, contain by far the most purines of any food in the human diet.

The most common forms of offal in the Western diet include liver , brain, heart, kidneys, and a mixture called Pâté.

Below is the purine content of a handful of foods. Note this is just an example Ive selected, and you can find much more extensive lists on Goutpal or here.

Purine Content of Food :

Consider that values listed are per 100 grams, so portion sizes must be taken into account Meat portions we eat tend to be heaviest.

Previous studies have not differentiated between intake of conventional meat and offal, so recommendations have to be the same. Given the strong link between meat intake and gout which is based on purine content alone offal should definitely be avoided too.

Somewhat contradictory to the purine-gout theory, consumption of purine-rich vegetables is not associated with an increased risk of gout .

Researchers speculate this could be due to a lower bioavailability of purines in vegetabes, as well as other nutrients which may offset the harmful effects of their purines.

Summary: Organ meats are some of the highest purine foods and should be completely avoided if you suffer gout attacks.

Action Beyond The Individual Level

Reducing our preference for sweet beverages will require concerted action on several levelsfrom creative food scientists and marketers in the beverage industry, as well as from individual consumers and families, schools and worksites, and state and federal government. We must work together toward this worthy and urgent cause: alleviating the cost and the burden of chronic diseases associated with the obesity and diabetes epidemics in the U.S. and around the world. Fortunately, sugary drinks are a growing topic in policy discussions both nationally and internationally. Learn more about how different stakeholders can take action against sugary drinks.

If You Want To Lower Your Caffeine Intake But Still Need A Little Bit Drink Iced Tea Every Day

If you’re trying to kick your coffee or energy drink habit but either can’t or don’t want to give up caffeine entirely, you may be able to wean yourself down to a more reasonable amount by switching to iced tea. Registered dietitian Trista Best shared, ” is a great drink for anyone who needs assistance getting a little extra concentration or energy to focus. Many excessive caffeine drinkers have chosen to detox to a lower amount by transitioning to iced tea over coffee or other high-caffeine beverages.”

As shared by The Washington Post, research suggests that the average American adult consumes between 122 mg and 225 mg of caffeine a day. Side effects of consuming too much caffeine, according to Healthline, can include anxiety, sleep problems, increased heart rate and blood pressure, and, ironically, fatigue. Why Coffee Might Be Beneficial

7 NATURAL Remedies That PREVENT Gout ð?

There are a few reasons why coffee may provide a protective effect against the buildup of uric acid. To understand why, we first need to understand how certain medications for gout work.

There are two types of gout medication that your doctor may prescribe: xanthine oxidase inhibitors and uricosurics.

Xanthine oxidase inhibitors function by inhibiting the activity of xanthine oxidase. Xanthine oxidase is an enzyme that helps the body metabolize purines. Since purines are a source of uric acid, inhibiting this enzyme can help to keep uric acid levels low.

Caffeine is considered to be a methyl xanthine . Therefore, it can also compete with and potentially block the action of xanthine oxidase.

Uricosurics function by helping the kidneys rid the body of uric acid. Although caffeine isnt necessarily considered a uricosuric, it may function in a similar manner.

Theres a lack of research that suggests coffee may contribute to raising your risk of gout. However, some researchers believe that theres insufficient evidence in favor of drinking coffee to reduce gout risk.

In one , 11 studies were investigated for their results on coffee intake and serum uric acid levels. The researchers found that while there was evidence to suggest coffee intake reduces gout risk, the results were not statistically significant enough to matter.

Alcohol And Gout Risk

12 Key Steps to Prevent Kidney Stones

Although beer may be the worst drink for gout, any alcoholic beverage can trigger gout symptoms in people who are prone to the disease. “Alcohol causes the kidneys to excrete alcohol instead of excreting uric acid. That increases the amount of uric acid in the blood, which could provoke a gout attack in about one or two days,” warns David Freeman, MD, a rheumatologist at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.

If You Have Trouble Absorbing Iron You May Not Want To Drink Iced Tea Every Day

If you’re one of the 20 percent of women with iron deficiency, you may want to think twice before deciding to drink iced tea every day. Naturopathic doctor Jo Nell Shaw told The List, “Black, green, and rooibos tea have a high level of tannins, which can be healthy unless a person has iron absorption issues. The tannins bind to iron and can increase the risk of anemia.”

According to the Iron Disorders Institute, iron deficiency is the “most common nutritional deficiency” in the world. It can lead to anemia , which can cause fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, and weakness. Iron deficiency can be caused by inadequate iron intake, increased demand , blood loss , and difficulty absorbing iron. Anemia can be serious the condition kills more than 5,000 Americans a year.

If your iron’s low, the Iron Disorders Institute recommends eating more iron-rich foods and taking an iron supplement. But you may also want to cut back on iced tea.

What Is Uric Acid

Uric acid is a waste byproduct of purine breakdown in the body. Purines are naturally produced in the body, as well as found in some foods. As purines are broken down, uric acid is created. Normally uric acid is either reabsorbed in the body or excreted via the urine and feces.

When there are more purines in the body than it can process, uric acid builds up in the bloodstream. This is called hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia can cause gout and/or kidney stones in some people, while others have no signs or symptoms at all.

Treatment for gout often includes medications, diet modification, and lifestyle changes, such as managing weight and quitting smoking. The foods you eat can have a direct impact on gout flares.

During a gout attack, modifying your diet may help decrease the length of the flare. Continuing to follow a gout-friendly diet, specifically a low-purine diet, may help prevent the risk of future gout attacks up to five fold.

Worst Foods & Beverages For Gout

    • At the top of the list of what to avoid is booze. Beer and liquor readily convert to uric acid and they slow down its elimination. Studies have shown mixed results about whether wine is OK in moderation.
    • Drinking sugary beverages, such as sodas sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, fruit juices or other sugar-containing drinks, is associated with gout. Notable exception: cherries, especially tart cherries, may be beneficial for gout.
    • Go light on red meats, particularly organ meats like liver, tongue and sweetbreads, which are all high in purines. Also avoid or minimize the amount of bacon, venison and veal you eat.
    • Maybe surprising: Turkey and goose are very high in purines. Chicken and duck are better bets.
    • Some seafoods also are high in purines, including anchovies, sardines, mussels, scallops, crabs, lobsters, oysters and shrimp.
    • Some vegetables are on the watch list, too: Consider cutting back on mushrooms, asparagus and spinach but veggies of any kind are much less likely to trigger a gout flare than alcohol or organ meats.
