Beer Is High In Purines
People with gout are often told to avoid foods that contain high levels of purines, a substance that breaks down into uric acid. High-purine foods include organ meats such as liver, fatty red meats, and certain types of seafood. Beer contains much higher amounts of purines than other alcoholic beverages, and the researchers suggest that this may explain their findings.
Arthritis expert Roland Moskowitz, MD, says it is probably a good idea for people with gout to cut beer and high-purine foods out of their diets while they are getting the condition under control. But he adds that new treatments that block the formation of uric acid have made diet less of a factor in controlling the disease.
Gout is now an imminently treatable disease, so maintaining a rigid diet is not as important as it once was, he tells WebMD. I wouldnt want my gout patients to eat a pound of steak every day, but eating a steak once in a while and drinking alcohol in moderation is probably fine.

What Are The Best Foods To Eat When You Have Gout
While eating particular foods wont be enough to make gout go away, studies suggest that certain foods and drinks may help reduce uric acid in your body. For example:
- Milk. Some early research suggests that drinking skim milk may help reduce uric acid and gout flare-ups. It speeds up the excretion of uric acid in your urine and also reduces your bodys inflammatory response to uric acid crystals in your joints.

- Water. People who drink five to eight glasses of water a day are less likely to experience gout symptoms. This makes sense since your kidneys use water to excrete uric acid in your urine. Water is also good for kidney health. Impaired kidney function is one factor that can contribute to gout.

Processed Foods And Refined Carbs
The modern Western diet is often high in processed foods and refined carbohydrates. In addition, processed foods and refined carbohydrates have been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and weight gain.
A 2017 study looked at gout incidence in people who followed either a Western diet or the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet. The researcher found the DASH diet was associated with a lower risk of gout, whereas the Western diet was associated with a higher risk of gout.
To help prevent gout symptoms, its best to limit highly processed foods and beverages and foods high in refined carbohydrates, such as sweets, baked goods and pastries, chips, crackers, cookies, candies, soda, ice cream, white breads, and some pre-made frozen meals.
Eating highly processed foods and refined carbohydrates in moderation will not only help with your gout, but your overall health as well.
If You Are Having Repeated Attacks See Your Doctor
Some patients can go a long time between attacks. In fact, for 62 percent of patients the next attack will be more than a year away, and some won’t have another attack in the next 10 years. However, if you begin to have more frequent attacks, talk to your doctor about escalating treatment. People think its normal to have flares every now and then, but its not. The gout can be doing damage to your joints. It means you still have too much uric acid, says Shakouri. In particular, ask about allpurinol. It wont help with an acute attack but will help prevent future attacks by reducing uric acid production.

So How Much Alcohol Is Too Much
I would suggest that you completely avoid alcohol but if you cant, there are certain limits you can follow. One drink is fine once in a while. That one drink alone will already put you at 36% risk for a recurrent gout attack. High alcohol intake means you are drinking 12 or more drinks per week. You dont want to be too lenient and get too close to this range.
While I dont recommend you drink beer if you suffer from gout, if you choose to have a drink at a friends BBQ party and consider having one and hopefully just one, then consider an organic beer that is brewed locally with organic ingredients. Stay away from American beers since many of them have GMO. Heineken beer would be my first choice or an Amstel Light but please dont have more than one beer.
If you developed gout at an early age , you need to be especially careful since alcohol can be a more likely trigger for a gout attack. In one observational study which followed 700 people, they found that those who developed gout before 40 were more likely to experience a gout attack triggered by alcohol compared to those who had gout after 40. This is probably because younger patients are more likely to drink beer than any other type of alcohol.

One study found that soybeans, soymilk, and soy powder increased uric acid in the blood significantly. However, larger population studies have recently told a different story. Several have reported that not only are soy products harmless for gout patients, but also people who eat more soy tend to have a reduced gout risk.
The Cause Of Gout Is More Than Just Diet
While diet is critical, dont overlook other important factors that affect gout. These include family history, sleep apnoea, and lack of physical exercise to name a few.
