Warm Water With Apple Cider Vinegar Lemon Juice And Turmeric

Hot Spring Gout Treatment

Apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and turmeric are each frequently recommended anecdotally for gout. Together, they make a pleasant beverage and remedy.

No strong research supports apple cider vinegar for gout, though studies show it may support the kidneys. Otherwise, research is promising for lemon juice and turmeric for lowering uric acid.

Mix juice from one squeezed half lemon into warm water. Combine with 2 teaspoons turmeric and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar. Adjust to taste. Drink two to three times per day.

Lemon Juice Dosage For Gout

More research is needed on how much lemon juice or lemon extract you need to help lower blood uric acid levels. The studies mentioned above used different dosages. In the first one, study participants had about 30 milliliters of freshly squeezed pure lemon juice daily. This is the juice of about one lemon per day.

In the second study, each person drank the fresh juice of two lemons diluted in two liters of water every day.

Its not known if bottled or frozen lemon juice would have the same effect as fresh juice. The dosage for lemon extract for people is also not yet determined.

Additionally, the studies didnt record the effect of lemon juice on gout symptoms, which is a crucial factor for anyone experiencing gout-related pain.

The Cause Of Gout Is More Than Just Diet

While diet is critical, dont overlook other important factors that affect gout. These include family history, sleep apnoea, and lack of physical exercise to name a few.

Further discussion of best treatment for gout is outside the scope of this article. But there are foods thought to be protective namely dairy, cherries, and coffee, in decreasing order of evidence.

And as much as I prefer focusing on what you should eat to prevent health scares, there are just so many clear trigger foods for gout.

Its important to deal with these factors first and foremost.

What Dietary Factors Increase The Risk Of Gout

Health Benefits of Lemon Water

A plant-based diet is ideal. Most meats are high in purines. Some of the highest are organ meats, poultry, shell fish, sardines, red meat, seafood, and wild game. Beer is also very high in purines. A twelve year study of 47,000 men conducted by Hyon Choi, MD, compared the effects of dietary intake of purine-rich foods in relation to the risk of having gout attacks. He reported that higher levels of meat and seafood consumption are associated with an increased risk of gout, whereas a higher level of consumption of dairy products is associated with a decreased risk of gout.

Consumption of purine-rich vegetables was not associated with gout.13

The 1993-1998 Singapore Chinese Health Study examined 63,257 Chinese adults, ages 45-74, and explored the impact of diet on the risk for developing gout. The researchers found that, after adjusting for potential confounding factors, total protein intake was associated with an increased risk of gout, while dietary intakes of soy and legumes were associated with a reduced risk of gout. In this particular study, red meat, eggs, dairy products, grains, nuts and seeds were not associated with an increased risk. Those who consumed legumes had 17% less risk of developing gout.14

What Is Gout And What Causes It

Before we can look at foods to avoid with gout, it is necessary to briefly understand what it is.

Gout is a form of joint inflammation, caused by excessive uric acid in circulation .

When the bodys natural uric acid threshold is exceeded, painful crystals can form in and around the joints. These crystals trigger the characteristic symptoms and pain.

Not everybody with high uric acid levels will get gout, but those who do always have high uric acid levels. This indicates there are other factors at play, but from a dietary perspective uric acid is the focus.

Excessive uric acid in the blood stream is typically driven by two factors: genetic predisposition and the ingestion of high-purine foods. Obviously, the dietary factor we can control.

When purines we eat are broken down and metabolised by the body, uric acid is formed as a by-product of this process. Its normal and healthy for uric acid to be formed, but excessive amounts are problematic.

Therefore, consuming less purine-rich foods should lower uric acid levels in your blood, lowering gout risk.

At least, in theory.

Its actually not that clear-cut because other nutrients appear to aggravate gout symptoms too

Heres a list of foods to avoid if you have gout, based on real scientific evidence.

Water For Gout: How Does It Help

One study stated that one good home remedy for gout is the uric acids solubility, which upsurges with a much higher pH ratio of the body. To be exact, when our body has a higher level of pH or more alkaline. With this, more uric acid will be liquefied and expelled out of the body. When you are getting sufficient fluids, the urine runs freely, its color is light, and is free of any odor. When the body isnt getting sufficient fluids, the urine color, concentration and odor rise as the kidneys ploy more fluid for the functions of the body.

One survey said that the participants in their survey who gulped over eight 8oz. glasses of water every day had a 48% percent gout flare-ups reduction. This is in comparison to those who drink only one glass a day. Always make sure that you are drinking enough amount of water every day, wherever you go. The more water that you drink, the lesser the chance you get of acquiring gout flare-ups. Not just that, youll also feel much better, much happier and energetic, less inactive. So get rid of the beer, soft drinks, and some other unbeneficial beverages now. Choose water, because it is better!

Why Lemon Juice May Be Helpful

How to Get Rid of Gout Fast with 11 Best Home Remedies

Lemon juice may help balance uric acid levels because it helps make the body more alkaline. This means it slightly raises the pH level of blood and other fluids. Lemon juice also makes your urine more alkaline.

According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, this happens because drinking lemon juice causes your body to release more calcium carbonate. The calcium mineral bonds to uric acid and breaks it down to water and other compounds. This makes your blood less acidic and lowers uric acid levels in the body.

When we consume plenty of water which is half a gallon per a day or better said 8 glasses of water, we will decrease the level of uric acid. Water also helps us lubricate the joints and helps us remove the uric acid from the body. In order to get this benefit, you must consume the just mentioned amount of water per a day. If you dont then there is a higher risk of developing a gout attack, dehydration or even kidney failure. There is no need in telling you that all of this also increases the level of uric acid, so you are at a higher risk of developing gout or gout attack.

Reducing Risk Of Gout’s Return

Results showed the more water they drank, the lower their risk of recurrent gout attacks. “For example, having five to eight glasses of water in the past 24 hours was associated with a 40% lower risk of having a gout attack, compared with drinking none or one glass of water in the past day,” says Tuhina Neogi, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.

Neogi stresses that people with gout shouldn’t substitute water for other treatments their doctors prescribe.

“But this suggests that dehydration may indeed be an important trigger for gout attacks, and that drinking water may be a simple intervention to help reduce the risk of recurrent attacks,” she tells WebMD.

Previous studies have shown that people who drink a lot of milk have a lower risk of developing gout, Dalbeth says.

So she and colleagues decided to study the effects of skim milk on blood uric acid concentrations, which, when elevated, raise the risk of gout.

The researchers collected blood and urine samples from 16 volunteers immediately before they drank soy or skim milk and then hourly over a three-hour period.

Results showed that after they drank soy milk, levels of uric acid rose 10% over a three-hour period. Drinking skim milk led to a 10% drop in uric acid levels. In comparison, Zyloprim, a standard medication used to treat gout, results in a 20% to 30% drop in uric acid, Dalbeth tells WebMD.

How Is Gout Managed

Some people only have one attack of gout in their lifetime and this is often managed with simple measures such as resting the joint, ice packs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen or diclofenac.

If attacks are frequent, in order to prevent more attacks, medicines which lower the level of uric acid in the blood such as allopurinol or febuxostat are usually needed. The lower the uric acid level, the lower the risk of more attacks. These medicines are usually needed for life. During the first few months after starting allopurinol for gout, you may have more attacks. These can be prevented by taking other medicines at the same time, for example NSAIDs or colchicine which are usually stopped after 6 months.
