New Year New You Fighting Back When You Have Gout

Now that the holiday feasts are over and the New Year is here, its a good time to take stock of your diet and consider healthy changes especially if you have gout.

Gout is a common form of inflammatory arthritis that can unleash intensely painful flares in individual joints, often in the big toe. An estimated 8 million Americans experience gout attacks, which can last for a few days. The condition can also become chronic and lead to the destruction of joints. Although theres no cure, there are medications to control gout, as well as lifestyle changes you can make to manage the condition and reduce or even eliminate attacks.

Gout develops in some people who have high levels of uric acid in the blood the uric acid can form needle-like crystals in soft tissues and joints. Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down chemicals called purines. Purines occur naturally in your body but are also found in certain foods and beverages. If your body cant get rid of the uric acid efficiently enough , the uric acid in your blood can build up and reach levels that could cause problems .

One way to minimize the risk of a gout flare is to cut back on high-purine foods. The DASH diet a low-sodium diet that emphasizes fruits and vegetables over red meats and processed foods is recommended for people with gout. The Mediterranean diet which emphasizes fruits, veggies, whole grains and healthy fats may also help. Find more gout info here.

These Are Considered The Best Fruits For Gout

1. Tart Cherries

Your uric acid count can be surprisingly affected by various fruits. One of the best fruits for gout is tart cherries. Doctors will even suggest that while having an attack you should drink several glasses of the tart cherry juice.

There is quite a lot of vitamin C and fiber contained in cherries. Vitamin C certainly helps reduce uric acid levels quite considerably and also controls inflammation of swollen joints.

Studies have shown that vitamin C consistently taken will reduce uric acid levels by up to 50%.

2. Strawberries

The healing effects and the power of strawberries were discovered by Linnaeus, the father of botany. It was during one of his gout attacks that his wife suggested he eat a few of these berries.

He wasnt keen on the idea but decided that it wouldnt hurt. After eating them he discovered that his wifes suggestion was correct and after that, if he suffered a gout attack, he would then eat the tasty strawberries.

A Warning remember that fruits and fruit juices are high in sugar and can possibly have a deleterious effect on your blood sugar levels.

3. Pineapple

The pineapple is the only fruit that contains bromelain as well as vitamin C. It has already been discovered that the breakdown of uric acid is something that bromelain is able to do, which means helping to reduce the pain from gout.

4. Apple

5. Lemon

6. Grapes

7. Bananas

8. Pomegranates

9. Kiwi Fruit

10. Mango

11. Coconut

12. Avocado

What Ingredients Are In Propel Water

Gatorade Fruit Punch Boisson

Lets start by looking at what Propel actually contains. Propel has a few different product lines, including an Immune Support line. But most of the ingredients are the same.

So lets look at the standard Propel Electrolyte Water, as of August 2021:

Propel Berry Electrolyte Water Ingredients: Water, Citric Acid, Sodium Hexametaphosphate , Natural Flavor, Salt, Potassium Sorbate , Potassium Citrate, Sodium Citrate, Ascorbic Acid , Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium, Calcium Disodium EDTA , Calcium Pantothenate , Niacinamide , Vitamin E Acetate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride .

Heres what I notice about these ingredients:

  • Propel is sweetened with sucralose and acesulfame potassium. These artificial sweeteners have zero calories, but some research connects them to other health issues. Well explore the evidence in more detail below.
  • Propel is a source of electrolytes. Propel has significantly more sodium and potassium than tap water. This can be positive if youre sweating from exercise or heat exposure. But is it too much sodium? More on that below.
  • Propel has many added vitamins. Vitamin C, E, B3, B5, and B6. Fortified vitamins likely do not help as much as those in whole fruits and vegetables. But Id still view them as neutral or slightly positive.
  • Propel has no artificial colors. Many zero-calorie sports drinks have artificial colors. Since these are controversial for safety, Id consider it positive that Propel doesnt have any.

Ten Tips For Beating Gout

If you have gout, use these nutrition tips to lower your risk:

  • See your GP to check or monitor gout risk factors

  • Drink up to four cups of regular or decaffeinated coffee a day

  • Have two to three serves of reduced-fat or skim dairy foods daily

  • Eat cherries regularly . Add to breakfast cereal and snacks, or mix with yoghurt

  • Avoid fasting and feasting. Both increase purine turnover and blood uric acid

  • Can Obesity Cause Gout

Obesity is a result of poor lifestyle choices that can lead to the development of insulin resistance which causes elevated triglycerides, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, chronic kidney disease, heart attacks and uric acid levels. The combination of these conditions alone makes an obese person more likely to develop gout among other health conditions.

Is Propel As Good For You As Water

If you acutely need rehydration and electrolytes, then Propel may be better than water. But in most other situations, plain water would likely be healthier to drink than Propel.

This is an interesting question. First, its worth noting that Propel is mostly water. Propel contains water plus other ingredients. Some of those ingredients are goodothers not so much.

The electrolytes and vitamins in Propel come with possible health benefits But the artificial sweeteners come with possible long-term risks .

If you need to rehydrate due to prolongedexercise or heat exposure, the benefits of Propel could outweigh the drawbacks. In those situations, drinking too much plain water without electrolytes can actually result in salt depletion heat exhaustion.

In such situations, you can also replenish your electrolytes with natural options like sea salt, coconut water, and other high-electrolyte foods. But Propel and other sports drinks are a convenient option.

In normal day to day life, water is the ideal drink for most of your fluids. It contains none of the extra, unnatural ingredients found in electrolyte drinks like Propel.

    Drinking Water To Relieve Gout

Sugar Amounts Exposed In Popular Hydration Drinks!

Water is one of the best and simplest home remedies for gout. Water burns clean, its passed out of your urine, sweat, breathing, perspiring while working and it doesnt stress the vital organs like the liver and kidneys and so on. Since water can serve as a joint lubricant, one who is at risk for gout should be sure to drink plenty of fluids. Drinking a half-gallon of water a day may keep gout attacks away. The recommended approximate amount is 812 eight fluid ounce glasses daily, or about eight glasses. If youre not sure how much eight fluid ounces is exactly, observe how much by pouring water into a measuring cup.

Water may help dilute uric acid, but the real benefit is in its ability to help excrete some of the acid. Water may make it easier for the kidneys to excrete uric acid and may make it less likely that it will form crystals, thus hopefully preventing the next gout attack. When theres less water in the body, the density of serum uric acid rises. Dehydration may also lead to kidney infections, stones and even failure and has been identified as a possible trigger for acute gout attacks. All this may create that excess uric acid that causes gout in the first place.

    Paleo Diet Causes Gout

The paleo diet supports the high consumption of fruits, vegetables and meats. This can be problematic when considering that many of the high value meats in the paleo diet are also on the high purine list. While it’s important to monitor your purine intake through meats, it’s more important to get rid of fructose and beer when trying to keep uric acid low. Additionally, white meats and certain fish are low in purines which makes them a viable option when it comes to being paleo and restricting your purine intake. Moderation and careful consideration of your intake is what is the most important when preventing a gout attack.

Is Propel Water Good For Weight Loss

One of the reasons people choose zero-calorie drinks like Propel is to avoid extra calories. But the evidence shows that consuming artificial sweeteners is surprisingly ineffective for weight loss.

Youd expect that switching from sugar to zero-calorie sweeteners would cause significant weight-loss but in most studies, they cause little to no weight loss.

Heres one explanation: Artificial sweeteners keep you accustomed to sweet drinks and food. So you still get cravings for sweets, and you end up eating more calories from something else.

So, Propel may not be the best for weight loss. However, the sweeteners in Propel dont seem to cause weight gain, either. So Propel likely wont make you gain or lose weight by itself.

The key to weight loss is your overall diet and calorie balance. One food doesnt make or break your diet. So if your goal is weight loss, consider tracking your calories as I describe in this postor else follow some of these 18 tips for weight loss without counting calories.

Whether you drink Propel water will not make or break your weight-loss journey by itself.

How Can Dehydration Cause Foot Pain

    Gatorade and Gout

A good example of foot pain caused by dehydration is gout. This is a form of arthritis that can cause extreme pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints of your foot, especially in your big toe.

Gout occurs when there is an excessive amount of uric acid in your body either because your body is overproducing it, or because your kidneys arent releasing enough through natural elimination. The acid then crystallizes, and its needle-like shards of crystals are deposited into your joints, causing inflammation and painful swelling that can linger for weeks at a time and return without warning.

The good news is that you can prevent or reduce the severity of gout flare-ups by drinking plenty of water. It dilutes the concentration of uric acid in your bloodstream, and it also helps your kidneys flush the acid from your body more efficiently.

    Alcohol And Gout Risk

Although beer may be the worst drink for gout, any alcoholic beverage can trigger gout symptoms in people who are prone to the disease. “Alcohol causes the kidneys to excrete alcohol instead of excreting uric acid. That increases the amount of uric acid in the blood, which could provoke a gout attack in about one or two days,” warns David Freeman, MD, a rheumatologist at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.

Does Propel Have Sugar Or Carbs

Propel does not contain sugar or carbs. The nutrition label for Propel Electrolyte Water shows 0 grams of total carbohydrates and 0 grams of total sugars. This makes Propel suitable for keto and other low-carb diets.

Instead of sugar or corn syrup, Propel is sweetened with two artificial sweeteners, sucralose and acesulfame potassium.

Itâs a good idea to drink lots of fluids — 8 to 16 cups a day. At least half of what you drink should be water. Vitamin C also can help lower uric acid, but studies also show that the high fructose in OJ may boost uric acid levels, so drink it in moderation. Caffeinated coffee can cut uric acid, too, as long as you donât overdo it.

    Donâts

Stay away from sugary drinks like soda and fruit juice. You also may need to limit or avoid alcohol as well. Talk with your doctor to find out whatâs right for you.

While a healthy diet can help control how much uric acid is in your system, you may still need medicine to prevent future attacks. Talk with your doctor about all your treatment options.

    Can Zinc Cause Gout

Foods to Eat During a Crohn’s Disease Flare

Zinc has a direct effect on various enzymes that are involved in the synthesis of proteins and tissues. This is especially important for gout sufferers because zinc can help speed the recovering from the inflammation caused by gout and can help speed up recovery and tissue repair. Zinc is a great supplement to take when seeking relief and long term damage to your tissues and joints.

How Can I Stay Hydrated To Reduce Pain

Staying properly hydrated is not just about how much water you consume, but also how much water your body retains and processes properly. Besides drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day, also include healthy, water-rich foods in your diet.

Water-rich foods include juicy fresh fruits and vegetables such as oranges, pineapple, cantaloupe, strawberries, raspberries, lettuce, celery, and green peppers. Does Propel Water Have Electrolytes

Propel Electrolyte Water has 160mg of sodium and 40mg of potassium per 12-oz serving. This is approximately the same amount of electrolytes as in Gatorade.

This means you can get the same amount of electrolytes as Gatorade, but without the sugar of Gatorade. However, you get artificial sweeteners in Propel instead, which some people consider just as bad for the reasons covered above.

Now, lets cover another question about the electrolytes in Propel

Several studies have found an increased gout risk from sugar-sweetened drinks. This link has been found in both men and women. One large study found that just one sugar-sweetened drink per day doubled a woman’s risk of developing gout compared with women who had less than one sugar-sweetened drink per month. “Studies show that sugar-sweetened drinks and fruit juices are associated with an increased incidence of gout attacks. Interestingly, these studies show that diet soda intake is not related to increased frequency of gout attacks,” says Sloane.
