High content, moderate content, high risk, and low risk are some of the ambiguous terms experts use to describe gout-causing foods and their purine content. It causes confusion because classifications based on content amounts can vary from each source. It is not uncommon to see the same type of food, like lobster, listed as high in purine by one source, but then listed as a moderate-risk by another.
Not to mention, different purine studies or tables have different data and results. A more simplified approach will taken instead of sounding like a technical report on determining purine content.
Several major health authorities consistently state the following food groups as high risk or high in purine content.

Healthy Fats Can Minimize Symptoms Of Gout
Certain healthy fats decrease the number of recurring flare-ups. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are essential fats that humans must consume because the body can’t make its own. There are times when gout medications manage the disease but do not lower the recurring gout attacks. Gout And Red Meat Are There Any Effects
Gout diet is based on the intake of purines, nutrients, and toxins. As you can imagine, you need most of the nutrients, but you must avoid toxins and keep purines at control.
Purines are directly connected with the uric acid. More purines, mean a higher level of uric acid and this means a higher risk from a gout attack. What about red meat?
A good thing is that it is average when it comes to purines. A bad thing is that it has them more than foods I normally recommend to become a part of the gout diet. Gout and red meat are partially linked in this case scenario.
Red meat contains 100mg of purines per 100 grams. This is average and it may vary such as 80 mg of purines, but cannot be generalized. What this means is that you can consume it in moderation each week, but not to indulge as much as you would like.
Gout and red meat have been tested and checked in countless studies and medical trials and I read all of them. The point is the same as I have explained earlier.

Oatmeal Has Moderate Amounts Of Purines
Oatmeal has about 50 to 150 milligrams of purines per 100 grams of the food. This puts oatmeal right in the middle of the range of milligrams for purine-containing foods.
While its not as high in purines as organ meats, scallops, or some fish, its still high enough to increase your risk of gout when eaten in excess.
Aspirin And Diuretics Significantly Increase Gout Risk
Not exactly foods to avoid with gout, but the ingestion of some common medications sharply raise the risk of a gout attack.
Specifically, low doses of aspirin, which one in three middle-aged Americans takes regularly to help prevent heart disease .
The emphasis is on low doses because aspirin has a dual effect on uric acid levels. Very high doses above 3,000 mg promotes excretion of uric acid , whereas low doses prevent excretion .
In a study of 49 elderly patients, just 75 mg of aspirin per day increased blood uric acid levels by 6% within one week. A daily dose of 150 mg kept levels high during the second week, before coming down with 300 mg doses in the third week .
Considering the typical dose for heart disease prevention is 81-325 mg per day, it is no real surprise this dosage is associated with a doubling in gout risk. In fact, even the use of a low-dose aspirin for two consecutive days increases risk of recurrent gout attacks .
Im by no means recommending you cease your medications if you have gout, but its important to understand the pharmaceutical triggers. First speak with your doctor and closely monitor uric acid levels before making any changes.
And if you need a temporary painkiller, choose paracetamol or ibuprofen. No aspirin.

How To Tell If Tomatoes Are A Trigger
Gout flare-ups often happen suddenly at night.
If you eat tomatoes regularly and are experiencing any of the following symptoms in one or more joints, tomatoes may be a trigger food for you:
- Limited range of motion
To determine if tomatoes are part of the problem, try eliminating all tomatoes and tomato-based products from your diet for 2-4 weeks.
Then add tomatoes back in and see how your body responds.
While you do this, it can help to keep a food journal to track details such as:
- What you eat and drink
- How much you eat and drink

- Any pain experienced, including where, when, and the intensity
If your gout symptoms improve or disappear when you stop eating tomatoes and then return or worsen when you begin to eat tomatoes again, the food is likely a trigger for you.

The only real way to avoid your risk is to get rid of it from your diet completely. But then again, we would all be lying if we said we can avoid processed meat. Saturated fats in nuts are healthy if you limit the amount to less than 10% of your daily calories.
The recommended daily serving of cashews, macadamia, and similar nuts is almost 30 grams or a cupped handful, which is about 176kcal.
Excessive consumption of saturated fat raises your bad cholesterol, increasing your risk of heart stroke and arterial diseases, but you dont need to cut out all saturated fats from your diet.
Its better to buy nuts you need to crack yourself so that youll have to spend more time getting to the nuts, making you eat less.
Plus, cracked nuts are generally unsalted, except for pistachios, making them even healthier.

How Does Fructose Raise Uric Acid Levels
The specific reason why fructose is superior than glucose in increasing fat stores likely relates to the unique first steps in fructose metabolism. When fructose enters the hepatocyte, it is metabolized by a specific enzyme, fructokinase C. Unlike glucokinase, which has a negative feedback system to prevent excessive phosphorylation, the phosphorylation of fructose by fructokinase will proceed uninterrupted, and as a consequence intracellular phosphate depletion and ATP depletion frequently occur. The fall in intracellular phosphate results in the stimulation of AMP deaminase that helps accelerate the degradation of AMP to IMP and later to uric acid. In turn, the intracellular generation of uric acid results in oxidative stress.1
Translation: Fructose is especially good at turning into fat. The enzymes in the liver that turn fructose into fat use up lots of ATP in the process. ATP contains purines that get broken down into uric acid.
