Do Compression Socks Help Gout

All About Compression Socks What You Need To Know

Compression socks that work great to relieve ankle swelling and achy legs!

Do you ever recommend compression socks to your patients? Why or why not?

In your opinion, are there benefits to compression socks? If so, what are they?

When worn correctly, compression socks are very beneficial in providing good circulation of the blood flow in the feet and legs. The consistent pressure along the feet and legs along with movement promotes blood flow up from your ankles through the veins in your legs and back towards your heart. This will reduce aches and pains usually caused by blood flow problems.

Who should wear compression socks?

Compression socks should be worn by patients that have venous insufficiency, such as DVT, varicose veins and diabetes, post-operative patients, pregnant women, people who stand or sit for long periods of time, and athletes especially those who run for prolonged periods of time.

Who should not wear compression stocks?

Patients that have arterial insufficiency should not wear compression socks as it can cause restriction of blood flow to lower extremities. Consult with your physician prior to wearing compression stockings.

How To Wear Compression Socks

Your primary care doctor or a podiatrist may order the proper style and fit. However, many of my patients have been professionally fit for maximum compression stockings, but they are extremely difficult for older patients to put on, Dr. Zinkin says. They often buy a lighter compression stocking without prescription from their local pharmacy, which at least enables them to put on in the morning, even if its not the optimal compression.

Difficulty getting the socks on was by far their biggest drawback, according to arthritis patients we heard from. Compression socks are too hard to put on, Kris S. told us on Facebook. Elle F. agreed: That is exactly why I cant wear them. I have issues with strength in my wrists and hands.

If youre having trouble getting them on, you can get a special stocking aid online or at a pharmacy, which may help. Its a frame that goes inside the stockings to help you get them on. It will also be easier to get them on if you make sure youre completely dry after a shower and dont have any lotion on your feet or legs.

Talk with your doctor about purchasing compression socks yourself, say, from Amazon or a local pharmacy. When selecting them, patients should choose a stocking or sock based on the circumference of their leg, Dr. Quirolgico says. You dont want to cut off circulation, but you also dont want the sock to fall down because its too loose.

Arthritis is a disability comprised of more than 100 different diseases and conditions. It has a multitude of possible causes, which can involve various organs and even the immune system of the body.

In very simplified terms, arthritis can be described as an irritation and soreness of the joints, or in a more medical term, joint inflammation. The severity and pattern of the condition depends on the specific type of arthritis.

According to the CDC it is estimated that in the United States alone approximately 50 million adults are diagnosed with arthritis and on a world wide scale in excess of 350 million people. The most frequently occurring forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia and gout.

To discuss all variations of arthritis would go far beyond the scope of our blog website. Arthritis in all of its forms still requires a significant amount of research and to date much is still unknown about the exact causes of this very painful and often debilitating disease.

For the purpose of exploring the possible benefits of compression stockings for individuals suffering from arthritis, our focus here shall be some of the most common symptoms of arthritis, which are pain and swelling in the legs and feet.

    Compression Socks For Gout

Nanosocks are medical compression socks for men and women that aim to provide instant pain relief by improving blood circulation with compression-zone technology for active recovery and performance.

Bad circulation in the feet may not seem like a major issue, but it can come with a number of serious impacts on daily life. Millions of Americans annually suffer from bad circulation in the feet. Circulation problems can create pain and inflammation, making it hard to just walk or move around without potentially debilitating pain. Clearly, addressing feet circulation issues is one of the best ways that older Americans can regain their independence and improve their quality of life.

Unfortunately, traditional treatments for bad feet circulation are few and far between. Some doctors might prescribe medications to treat some causes of circulation, but these pills might come with unwanted side effects, and some pharmaceuticals might not work at all to improve mobility and provide relief. Many sufferers of circulation problems in the feet have turned to alternative medicine and supplements as a potential solution to their problem.

Ice Or Heat Compression Or Not

Do you think it is better to have ice or heat in the long term for faster healing? Also do you think compression bandage or leaving an unwrapped is better?

My understanding is that heat promotes the inflammation , cold promotes the formation of crystals , and compression I think would be bad because you’d be squeezing the pointy crystals into yourself.

My rheumatologist tells me to use ice, but others on here have said that it helps crystals form. I don’t know of it helps or not. I have tried heat and I feel that it makes my flare ups worse. So as far as heat and ice go, I don’t really use either. I do always use an ace wrap when I have a flare up and I think it helps.

it’s all wives tales. ice packs aren’t going to penetrate far enough to affect crystal formation. you can basically just go with whatever gives you relief.

For preventative measures I go with warm and loose. I have three pairs of big, warm, winter socks. Two fit tight and one are loose. I tried the tight socks but they didn’t help and sometimes seemed to make it worse. But the loose socks seem to help a lot. Whenever I feel a tingle of pain start up I’ll wear them during the night and will feel better the next day.

As for what I’ve found most helpful during a flare up…mixed results. Sometimes cold helps, sometimes hot foot baths help, sometimes nothing helps. A few times I’ve just soaked in a hot bath for like an hour and I usually feel like it’s done something useful.

Can Chafe And Bruise Your Legs

If you have dry skin or are traveling in climates with dry air , your skin is more likely to chafe or scrape. People who have a compromised skin barrier may experience cuts, scrapes, and bruises from compression socks. Note that when compression socks or stockings fit properly, this is far less likely to happen.

Compression Socks For Gout The Link

Compression socks for gout are one of the oldest and the most effective treatments. First of all, these socks wont cure gout nor they will help you by providing amazing benefits within a single hour. However, they do help!

Compression socks will boost blood flow in the targeted area. If we know that gout commonly occurs in the big toe, promoting circulation here will result in faster crystal removal.

In return, you get a flare that lasts less and usually doesnt cause as much pain as without compression socks. Although I am referring to conventional compression socks, there are variations that can be worn on different parts of the body.

Some manufacturers claim that compression socks also massage the affected area and decrease swelling, pain, and tenderness. I personally believe that this isnt true. It may help some, but probably not all.

Some people claim that compression socks made their gout flare worse. This isnt possible and chances are high that another trigger was present. It was a coincidence that happens, nothing more.
