What Medications Are Similar

How Can I Stay Healthy While Taking Naprosyn

Its important to take Naprosyn regularly and as directed to stay healthy and feel the full benefits of the medication. However, if directed by the prescriber, even prescription Naprosyn can be taken as needed and not always scheduled.

For regular use, try using daily pill boxes or inverting your medication bottle each time you take your dose so that you can track whether youve already taken it that day or not. Forgetting to take your medication on time can result in unnecessary pain.

In addition to taking your Naprosyn regularly, you should also exercise as much as you can tolerate and stick to a healthy diet.

What If I Forget To Take It

If you take allopurinol:

• once a day take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until the following day, skip the missed dose.
• twice or more a day – if you do not remember until your next dose is due, skip the missed dose and take the dose that is due.

Never take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

How To Take Naprosyn

This oral medication can be taken as an immediate or extended-release tablet, suspension form, or even topically. If you are taking the extended-release Naprosyn tablets, swallow them whole. Do not crush, split, chew, or try to dissolve them.

You can take Naprosyn with food, milk, or antacids to help decrease the chances of an upset stomach. If you are taking antacids, avoid taking any with ingredients such as magnesium oxide or aluminum hydroxide. If you are going to take an antacid, the recommendation is to take one containing aluminum and magnesium hydroxide. This is preferred over others.

If you are taking the EC tablets, make sure you take the antacid and your Naprosyn dose at least two hours apart from each other.

As a rule for all NSAIDs, Naprosyn treatment should begin with the lowest effective dose and be used for the shortest possible duration. If your pain is severe enough, your provider may prescribe opioid medications as well. Examples of opioids include hydrocodone, oxycodone, and codeine.

For less severe pain, you can take Naprosyn with other pain relievers like Tylenol. However, it should not be taken together with other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and celecoxib.

How And When To Take It

The usual dose of allopurinol is 100mg to 300mg a day. Follow your doctor’s advice on how many tablets to take, and how many times a day.

You’ll have regular blood tests to monitor your uric acid levels. If your uric acid level does not come down far enough, your doctor may increase your dose .

If you have kidney or liver disease, your doctor may prescribe a lower dose and will monitor you more closely.

Adult dosage

Naproxen:

Immediate-release oral tablet

• The initial dose is 750 mg, followed by 250 mg every 8 hours until the attack subsides.

Delayed-release oral tablet

• The initial dose is 1,000 to 1,500 mg once daily followed by 1,000 mg once daily until the attack subsides.

Naproxen sodium:

Immediate-release oral tablet

• The initial dose is 825 mg, followed by 275 mg every 8 hours until the attack subsides.

Child dosage

Dosage for people younger than 18 years hasnt been established.

Special dosage considerations

If youre older than 65 years, your body may process this drug more slowly. Your doctor may start you on a lowered dose so that too much of this drug doesnt build up in your body. Too much of the drug in your body can be dangerous.

Study Summaries: Oral Steroids: A Safe And Effective Alternative

Janssens et al conducted a double-blind, randomized equivalence trial of 118 patients to compare the efficacy of prednisolone and naproxen for the treatment of monoarticular gout, confirmed by crystal analysis of synovial fluid. The study was conducted in the eastern Netherlands at a trial center patients were referred to by their family physicians. Those with major comorbidities, including a history of GI bleed or peptic ulcer, were excluded.

Participants were randomized to receive either prednisolone 35 mg* or naproxen 500 mg twice a day, with look-alike placebo tablets of the alternate drug, for 5 days. Pain, the primary outcome, was scored on a validated visual analog scale from 0 mm to 100 mm . The reduction in the pain score at 90 hours was similar in both groups. Only a few minor side effects were reported in both groups, and all completely resolved in 3 weeks.

Challenges To Implementation: No Significant Barriers

We found little to prevent physicians from adopting this practice changer. Oral steroids are readily available and inexpensive, and most primary care clinicians regularly prescribe them for other conditions. This practice change recommendation should be readily implemented.

However, if you begin to have more frequent attacks, talk to your doctor about escalating treatment. People think its normal to have flares every now and then, but its not. The gout can be doing damage to your joints. It means you still have too much uric acid, says Shakouri. In particular, ask about allpurinol. Taking Naproxen With Other Painkillers

Do not take naproxen with ibuprofen or other NSAIDs.

It’s OK to take naproxen with paracetamol or co-codamol that you buy over the counter, but this should just be for short periods of time.

If you often need to take extra painkillers with naproxen or for more than a few days, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Sometimes taking different painkillers together is a good way to relieve pain, but there may be other treatments you can try.

It’s OK to take other painkillers with naproxen for longer if your doctor has given them to you on prescription and told you to take them together.

Overdose: What Happens If I Take Too Much Naprosyn

Taking too much Naprosyn can cause some common and less severe symptoms, including:

• Fatigue

• Difficulty breathing
• Coma

If you overdose on naproxen and go to the hospital, there are various methods of treatment to remove naproxen from the body. You may need to vomit or take activated charcoal to prevent further drug absorption.

In some instances, you might undergo a procedure called osmotic catharsis. You would only need osmotic catharsis if substantial amounts of Naprosyn are taken or if you are taken to the hospital within four hours of the overdose.
