How Milk Cuts Gout Risk
In the 1600s, famous English philosopher and fellow gout sufferer John Locke scribbled in his notebooks about all the various treatments hed tried to relieve his gout, and whether or not they worked. Topping his list of effective remedies? Milk.
Almost 400 years later, this ancient wisdom still rings true. According to a landmark study on diet and gout conducted by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvards medical and public health schools, it was found after tracking the gout symptoms of over 47,000 men that those who the highest consumption of dairy products were up to 42 percent less likely to develop gout over their lifetimes.
In a 2009 study from researchers in Auckland, New Zealand, researchers further investigated the milk connection by collecting blood and urine samples from 16 volunteers immediately before and after they drank soy or skim milk. After drinking soy milk, levels of uric acid rose 10 percent on average over a three-hour period. After drinking skim milk? Uric acid levels dropped by 10 percent in the same time frame.
More recently, a 2012 study, also conducted in New Zealand, looked at the effects of taking an enriched skim milk supplement to provide gout relief. The study involved 120 people whod had at least two gout flare-ups over the last four months. Participants received either lactose powder, skimmed milk powder, or skimmed milk powder with added GMP and G600 .

Do I Need To Stop Drinking Alcohol With Gout
Yes, its a good idea to cut out alcohol. Alcohol molecules in your body tend to increase uric acid levels, so drinking can push you over the edge and into a flare-up. If youre newly diagnosed and start taking medication, try cutting out alcohol at first. Your doctor may allow you to add a small amount back into your diet over time as your uric acid levels come down. But even then, its best to avoid beer and liquor and stick to safer choices such as red wine, Dr. Burg says.
All myths aside, the best advice for people with gout is to eat fresh, unprocessed foods. Choose complex carbohydrates over refined carbs from packaged or processed foods. And always drink plenty of water because dehydration is a risk factor for an acute attack.

High Risk Does Not Always Mean High In Purines
High content, moderate content, high risk, and low risk are some of the ambiguous terms experts use to describe gout-causing foods and their purine content. It causes confusion because classifications based on content amounts can vary from each source. It is not uncommon to see the same type of food, like lobster, listed as high in purine by one source, but then listed as a moderate-risk by another.
Not to mention, different purine studies or tables have different data and results. A more simplified approach will taken instead of sounding like a technical report on determining purine content.

Why Should You Avoid Alcohol Especially Beer
Ethanol has an effect on uric acid levels and can therefore lead to gout. Studies have shown that this risk varies according to the type of alcoholic beverage beer poses a bigger risk than spirits, but moderate wine drinking does not appear to increase the risk of gout.
Purines in beer, such as the highly absorbable guanosine, may have an effect on blood uric acid levels, thereby posing a greater risk for gout than spirits or wine. A daily glass of wine as part of your gout diet may actually have health benefits and does not pose an increased risk of gout.

Sugar Content Of Cheese
As we saw previously, milk contains lactose which is indeed a sugar. But the cheese cultures convert the lactose into lactic acid so that the lactose is now largely missing from the finished product.
So cheese is generally safe to eat with gout .
But, not only is cheese safe to add to your gout diet, several studies have linked milk and dairy produce, including cheese, to reduced uric acid levels and a lower risk of gout!
Is Pizza Bad For Gout
Some types of pizza must be avoided. This is especially the case with the ones that are rich in meat toppings and too many tomatoes. They can trigger a gout attack and they are not great. Some of you may believe that pizza and gout must not be linked ever.
This isnt true. Many types of pizza are beneficial for gout sufferers or at least neutral. They are delicious and they can be easily prepared. They wont spike uric acid nor do they contain a lot of purines.
Pizza, in general, does not increase uric acid. An average slice of a pizza will have 136 calories, 2 grams of fat and also 25 grams of carbs. 5 grams of protein are available as well. Vitamin B except B12 is present across the entire pizza.
I must explain the matter in detail so I must cover the ingredient section. The food in question can be a problem if it contains too much of tomatoes, seafood, and red meat. All of these ingredients come with a high purine count and they can cause a gout attack.
As such, any type of pizza that is based on the aforementioned ingredients isnt an appealing choice and should be avoided. Luckily, in my pizza and gout research, I have discovered that there is a safe option.

The Cause Of Gout Is More Than Just Diet
While diet is critical, dont overlook other important factors that affect gout. These include family history, sleep apnoea, and lack of physical exercise to name a few.

Shellfish Crustacea And Mollusks
There are two groups of shellfish, crustacea and mollusks. Crustacea includes crabs, shrimp, crayfish and lobsters. Mollusks are oysters, clams, oysters, mussels, squid, scallops and snails.
Which shellfish group is higher gout risk? There is no big difference. A purine table from a 2014 Japanese study included a comprehensive list of different shellfish and seafood. It listed oysters, shrimp and certain squid with similar purine content.
The research also determined different species can have different purine concentrations. For example, a snow crab had more purines than a king crab.
Most of the medical experts recommend to limit the portions to an unfulfilling 4-6 ounces. An amount which most of us can easily eat more of if not aware.
Insight: Even after realizing different shellfish have different purine amounts, shellfish is still the most unpredictable food group to gauge gout for me. On some occasions, I would eat a small amount of crabs, and end up with a terrible flare up in my ankle. Then another time, I would eat about twice as calamari and not feel any symptoms. My uric acid level at the time may have been a factor, but he unpredictability made me reduce my shellfish intake. However, I learned to prepare myself when I want to satisfy a craving.

Fruit Fructose And Gout
Fructose is what gives some fruits their natural sweetness. Researchers report a correlation between foods high in fructose and gout symptoms, which can include chronic pain. These fruits include apples, peaches, pears, plums, grapes, prunes, and dates. Its okay to eat these fruits if you have gout as long as you do so in moderation. Limit yourself to one to two cups per day. More importantly, avoid soda or soft drinks and juices that are sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. Drink water or real fruit juices instead .

Things To Cut Down On
Meat and seafood
High intakes of red meat and seafood are associated with a greater risk of gout because of their high purine content and impact on uric acid production.
Foods that contain yeast, such as Vegemite and Marmite, are also high in purine.
Fructose is a simple sugar found in honey, fruit, some vegetables and sweeteners. Fructose increases purine metabolism, raising blood uric acid levels.
Avoid sweeteners high in fructose such as honey, brown sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, golden syrup and palm sugar. Check your tolerance for fruits, vegetables and other foods high in fructose.
Uric acid levels tend to be higher in people who regularly consume sugar-sweetened drinks. Those drinking one to two sugar-sweetened soft drinks a day are almost twice as likely to have gout as those who drink only one a month.
When it comes to whole fruit, results are not clear. While one study found a higher risk of gout with higher fruit intakes, another found a lower risk. The opposing results are partly confounded by the variation in fructose content of different fruits.
The effect of specific alcoholic beverages on blood uric acid levels varies. Beer is high in purine and increases uric acid more than spirits, while moderate wine intake appears neutral.
Dairy Products High In Fat
Full-fat dairy products like heavy cream and whole milk are discouraged for people with gout. However, some studies suggest incorporating dairy products like cheese and yogurt that are low in fat, into your diet may actually reduce your risk of gout. The best option then, is to choose dairy products that are low in fat. Fortunately, there are many low fat ice creams and other products on the market.
