Some types of pizza must be avoided. This is especially the case with the ones that are rich in meat toppings and too many tomatoes. They can trigger a gout attack and they are not great. Some of you may believe that pizza and gout must not be linked ever.
This isnt true. Many types of pizza are beneficial for gout sufferers or at least neutral. They are delicious and they can be easily prepared. They wont spike uric acid nor do they contain a lot of purines.
Pizza, in general, does not increase uric acid. An average slice of a pizza will have 136 calories, 2 grams of fat and also 25 grams of carbs. 5 grams of protein are available as well. Vitamin B except B12 is present across the entire pizza.
I must explain the matter in detail so I must cover the ingredient section. The food in question can be a problem if it contains too much of tomatoes, seafood, and red meat. All of these ingredients come with a high purine count and they can cause a gout attack.
As such, any type of pizza that is based on the aforementioned ingredients isnt an appealing choice and should be avoided. Luckily, in my pizza and gout research, I have discovered that there is a safe option.
Alcohol Because Of The Yeast
Alcohol was on the avoid or high-risk list by every major health source referenced. Abstaining from drinking could be a tough ask for many. The point here is there is plenty of scientific evidence confirming drinking alcohol directly increases uric acid levels that induces gout.
Yeast, in general, contains a high amount of purines. The most common gout triggers made with yeast are beer, liquor, wine, cider, marmite, vegemite, processed meats, cured meats, and extracts.
Brewerâs yeast is used to make drinking alcohol. It is the main ingredient that contains purines. Beer gets the bulk of its purine content from brewerâs yeast, which has about three times the purines as bakerâs yeast.
Some sources stated that wine is less of a risk than beer and liquor. However, a 2015 study published by the American Journal of Medicine stated otherwise.
Episodic alcohol consumption, regardless of type of alcoholic beverage, was associated with an increased risk of recurrent gout attacks, including potentially with moderate amounts. Individuals with gout should limit alcohol intake of all types to reduce the risk of recurrent gout attacks.

Risks Of Eating Chicken With Gout
Gout patients can have up to 6 ounces of protein-rich, high-purine foods including chicken per day. Restrict yourself to 2 to 3-ounce servings at a given meal. Drink 8 ounces of water before and after having meals comprising chicken, particularly if you are diagnosed with gout or have a record of kidney stones.
A good amount of fluid intake washes uric acid out of the blood, which helps to prevent the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. If your gout symptoms have recently worsened, eliminate chicken from your diet until the problem resolves.
Which Other Lifestyle Factors Can Affect Gout
While there are no controlled studies or evidence on the effect of lifestyle changes on the incidence of gout, expert opinion is that positive changes in lifestyle can be beneficial to the management of gout. Being overweight is not recommended for gout suffers and the available evidence indicates that losing weight may helpful. Dietary modifications to achieve a healthy body weight are recommended, however the use of crash, high-protein and low-carbohydrate diets should be avoided. Slow and steady weight loss is ideal and support from a dietitian should be sought to help develop a sustainable and balanced weight loss plan. Rapid weight loss is not recommended as it can increase the amount of uric acid in the body leading to an increased chance of a gout attack.
Regular exercise such as swimming or walking is also recommended as it may help reduce the frequency of gout attacks. In addition, it may have a beneficial effect on associated co-morbidities such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and insulin resistance.

Processed Meat And Gout
As a gout sufferer, you are probably already aware that certain red meats and organ meats are high in purines therefore, consumption of this food group should be limited. There are already several studies proving that individuals with diets consisting of processed sweet, salty food as well as red and processed meats are at higher risk for gout.
Take note that these processed meats are the worst offenders when it comes to gout. They are very high in saturated fat and sodium and should avoided as much as possible.

Nitrites are a common ingredient added to processed meat. This is what gives it its pink color and salty flavor. In addition, it prevents bacteria growth and cuts food poisoning risk. Its the main ingredient thats causing these diseases associated with processed meat. Scientists found that nitrites make meat more carcinogenic and it may be responsible for the formation of cancer-causing compounds in the body. The real risk, however, comes when nitrites interact with the compounds in meat and when it is cooked in high heat. This forms the compound called nitrosamines which can cause cancer.
Dont be fooled by those marketing labels either. If a processed meat is labeled as natural or unprocessed, it may just be that they used vegetable powders like celery salt to preserve the product and prevent foodborne illnesses. The naturally-occurring nitrates in vegetables are inherently not bad but once added to meat, it converts into nitrite which can be harmful for the body. This still puts you at risk for certain types of cancer.
The scary part is that the U.S.D.A allows this. So as long as the meat has not been cured with nitrites or nitrates, it is legal for manufacturers to label their product as uncured. Meat companies are aware of the bad rep their products get so they add labels like no nitrites added, no artificial preservatives, or uncured to put you at ease.
