Antioxidants Credited For Cherries Effect In Gout
The researchers credit anthocyanins â antioxidant pigments found in red and purplish fruits and vegetables, including cherries, purple cabbage, beets, blueberries, raspberries, and purple grapes â for the beneficial effect. Antioxidants stabilize unstable molecules called free radicals, which cause inflammation and damage cells and tissue.
Senior researcher Tuhina Neogi, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, says that while the researchers plan to look at other fruits, âour suspicion is that it is an effect of cherries, which are thought to contain the highest levels of anthocyanins.â
John S. Sundy, MD, PhD, a gout expert at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., tells WebMD that a lot of his patients have tried cherries. âIt helps some and not others.
âI donât prescribe it and we donât know what dose to recommend. But as long as itâs used as a complement and not an alternative to recommended treatments, itâs hard to imagine any downside to it,â says Sundy, who was not involved with the research.
The researchers hope to get funding for a more robust clinical trial in which some people with gout eat cherries and others do not.
This study was presented at a medical conference. The findings should be considered preliminary as they have not yet undergone the âpeer reviewâ process, in which outside experts scrutinize the data prior to publication in a medical journal.

Processed Foods And Refined Carbs
The modern Western diet is often high in processed foods and refined carbohydrates. In addition, processed foods and refined carbohydrates have been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and weight gain.
A 2017 study looked at gout incidence in people who followed either a Western diet or the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet. The researcher found the DASH diet was associated with a lower risk of gout, whereas the Western diet was associated with a higher risk of gout.
To help prevent gout symptoms, its best to limit highly processed foods and beverages and foods high in refined carbohydrates, such as sweets, baked goods and pastries, chips, crackers, cookies, candies, soda, ice cream, white breads, and some pre-made frozen meals.
Eating highly processed foods and refined carbohydrates in moderation will not only help with your gout, but your overall health as well.

Definitely! You can satisfy your sweet cravings by eating fruit instead. Its natures candy and it contains vitamins and minerals that are not present in processed food like candy.
In the beginning, itll be hard to make the switch from candy to fruit. This is because candy is more sweet and very convenient to consume. You just remove the wrapper and eat as much as you want. But thats not the worst part of it. Sugary foods like candy are made to be addictive. Its not your fault you cant help yourself with just one piece of candy. So dont be surprised if you find yourself craving more even if you promised to eat just one a day. These addictive foods are just designed this way. Fruits, however, are more straightforward. Theyre natural and theyre healthy. You can consume them in different ways depending on what youre having. And they might not be as sweet as you want them to be. This is because your taste buds have been accustomed to the highly sweet taste of candy. But try it! Cut down your candy consumption and slowly replace it with fruit. Once you have completely made the switch to fruit only, youll find that its more satisfying to eat and you wont crave sweets as much.
You can also consume dried fruits. These might me much sweeter than normal fruit but theyre not as bad as candy.

No. Patients often ask me about desserts, as well as entrees with rich sauces, says Dr. Burg. Its a common myth that these foods cause gout. When eaten in moderation, desserts and other rich foods do not affect gout flare-ups. But moderation is the key word. Rich foods might not cause flare-ups directly, but they can cause weight gain. And obesity is a major risk factor for gout attacks.

Bad Diet Bad Health Bad Uric Acid
Several studies have shown a relationship between diet and cases of hyperuricemia, as well as gout. Consumption of purine-rich foods and alcohol has been consistently associated with higher blood levels of uric acid. In contrast, dairy products, vegetables, fruits, grains and some other foods are associated with lower blood levels of uric acid, as reviewed recently by Ekpenyong and Daniel .
For instance, a new study from Korea compared nutrient intake and diet quality between a group of people with hyperuricemia and a control group . The study was a type of observational study that involved analyzing data from more than 9000 people who underwent health examination during a specific period. They all had completed a detailed three-day food record, a questionnaire on dietary habits, and laboratory tests.
The researchers found many clear differences between people with hyperuricemia and those with normal blood levels of uric acid . The hyperuricemia sufferers had higher body mass index, thicker waists, and unhealthier cholesterol levels than the controls. So it was perhaps not surprising that the hyperuricemia subjects drank more alcohol and ate less veggies. They also had lower intake of dairy products and several important vitamins and minerals than their healthier counterparts.
The Korean study also found that hyperuricemia was around five times more common in men than in women. This is consistent with the fact that gout is more common in men than in women.
