According to the Mayo Clinic, Gout is a common and complex form of arthritis that can affect anyone.

Its characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness in one or more joints, most often in the big toe.

Gout is a very painful condition that appears to be quite responsive to the contents of ones diet.

So what about carrots, are they ok to eat if you have gout?

Eating carrots in reasonable amounts could be a good choice if you have gout.

Carrots are fairly low in purines and also have a considerable amount of fiber, which may be beneficial in reducing symptoms of gout and improving uric acid metabolism.

However, its important to realize that there are no magical foods that will cure your gout.

Gout is an inflammatory disease, and you may find relief from your symptoms if you can find ways to decrease overall systemic inflammation.

Alcohol Is The Biggest Risk Factor For Gout

It is well-established that frequent alcohol intake dramatically increases risk of gout .

The Framingham Heart Study of over 4,500 participants provides some perspective.

Researchers found that regular alcohol use was associated with three times greater risk of gout in women compared to those who have less than 2 standard drinks per week. For men, regular drinkers had double the risk of non-drinkers .

Beer seems to be the worst, followed by hard liquors such as spirits. Interestingly, moderate wine consumption is not linked with any risk .

The reason why alcohol increases uric acid levels is still not well-understood. Some forms, particularly beer, can be high in purines but they are certainly not the richest source of purines in our diet.

Additional theories propose that excessive alcohol may also reduce the bodys ability to excrete uric acid. Others state that alcohol especially beer increases the chemical breakdown of purine-containing ATP nucleotides, which is a precursor of uric acid production .

Summary: Regular alcohol intake severely raises uric acid levels in the blood. It doubles, if not triples your risk of gout.

How Does Alcohol Affect People With Gout

Alcohol disrupts the removal of uric acid from the body. Its thought that high levels of purine in alcoholic beverages lead to this disruption.

Normally, purines would break down into uric acid and get flushed out of the body through urine. However, this process is interrupted when uric acid levels get too high. Crystals form around the joints, and gout develops.

To prevent further gout attacks, stick to these guidelines:

  • avoid alcohol when having an attack
  • limit wine consumption
  • avoid beer

Keep in mind that you should avoid alcohol altogether unless your doctor says otherwise. Gout-friendly recipes take these alcohol restrictions into account as well.

Added sugar is a big problem in the modern diet.

Generally speaking, the sugar that is added to our food and drink products are 50% glucose and 50% fructose.

While glucose molecules are metabolised in the cell, fructose is metabolised in the liver. Further explanation is out of the scope of this article, but they behave very differently in the body.

Fructose intake, and not glucose intake, is strongly linked with gout.

Soft drinks and fruit juices tend to have the greatest amount of added sugar, and therefore the greatest amount of added fructose.

In fact, gout occurrence in the US has risen in line with fructose consumption since 1970 .

In a large study of over 46,000 men, researches found that two or more sugar-sweetened soft drinks a day was associated with an 85% increased risk of gout .

The largest consumers of sugar-sweetened soft drinks actually had a risk of gout comparable to the risk seen with three to five servings of alcohol.

Unfortunately the researchers did not account for family history of gout, which may or may not have changed their findings somewhat.

The strange thing out of all this, however, is that soft drinks dont typically contain purines.

Treatment options currently include keeping pressure off the affected joint, the use of ice packs during attacks, and taking anti-inflammatory drugs.

Aspirin And Diuretics Significantly Increase Gout Risk

Not exactly foods to avoid with gout, but the ingestion of some common medications sharply raise the risk of a gout attack.

Specifically, low doses of aspirin, which one in three middle-aged Americans takes regularly to help prevent heart disease .

The emphasis is on low doses because aspirin has a dual effect on uric acid levels. Very high doses above 3,000 mg promotes excretion of uric acid , whereas low doses prevent excretion .

In a study of 49 elderly patients, just 75 mg of aspirin per day increased blood uric acid levels by 6% within one week. A daily dose of 150 mg kept levels high during the second week, before coming down with 300 mg doses in the third week .

Considering the typical dose for heart disease prevention is 81-325 mg per day, it is no real surprise this dosage is associated with a doubling in gout risk. In fact, even the use of a low-dose aspirin for two consecutive days increases risk of recurrent gout attacks .

Another type of medication known to trigger gout is diuretics. They are typically used to treat high blood pressure and oedema, and if feasible should be discontinued in gout sufferers.

Im by no means recommending you cease your medications if you have gout, but its important to understand the pharmaceutical triggers. First speak with your doctor and closely monitor uric acid levels before making any changes.

And if you need a temporary painkiller, choose paracetamol or ibuprofen. No aspirin.

“Beak trimming,” according to the United States Department of Agriculture, “is a routine husbandry procedure practiced in the poultry industry to prevent feather pecking and cannibalism.”

More than 90% of the country’s 296 million egg-laying hens live in cages for most of their lives, which range from 80-110 weeks long. United Egg Producers guidelines state that cage floors must be at least 67 square inches per bird, about 8 by 8 inches, a few inches smaller than a standard piece of paper. In these cages, hens are unable to engage in natural behaviors nesting, dustbathing, foraging, flying, wing-flapping, or walking, which the USDA says, “results in stress, which leads to the expression of harmful behaviors.”

As of January 1, 2012, these cages are banned in Europe.

Feather pecking and cannibalism, “can lead to suffering and death” but can be mitigated with beak trimming. Most trimming is done on growing farms, where the chicks grow into egg-laying hens. It is usually performed with a hot blade beak trimming machine before the chicks reach ten days old. This method “is likely to be acutely painful” and cause “pain… of a relatively short duration,” according to a 2011 article published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science.

However, Gregory says that beak trimming is a “scientifically humane proven method, similar to trimming one’s finger nails.”

Can Cherry Juice Make Gout Worse

Drinking too much cherry juice can cause stomach discomfort and diarrhea. For people with frequent acute flares or chronic gout, doctors may recommend preventive therapy to lower uric acid levels in the blood using drugs like allopurinol, febuxostat, and pegloticase.

Foods To Eat For People With Gout

An outlier to the rule is purine-rich vegetables like spinach, cauliflower, or mushrooms. These foods are shown to lower the risk of flare-ups. Fruits, especially cherries, are recommended as alternatives to other sugary snacks.

Also “lean meat, like chicken and turkey, is okay. Leafy greens and vegetable protein like soy are also a good source,” says Singh. “Moderation is the key and avoiding the foods is the most important thing.”

Researchers have also found that you can reduce the amount of purine in certain high-purine fish including turbot, European barracuda, beltfish, Japanese Spanish mackerel, and sea catfish by boiling it, which transfers the purine from the fish to the boiling water.

Despite the fact that research strongly suggests that cherry juice can treat gout, there isnt yet a standard dosage. The amount of cherry juice that you consume should depend on the intensity of your symptoms.

The Arthritis Foundation suggests eating a handful of cherries or drinking a glass of tart cherry juice per day, since the available research noted improvements in people who drank a glass every day.
