A group of rheumatologists recently spoke to AOL Health about purines, which can increase the risk of gout. Purines are compounds that can be found in high-protein foods and also in some drinks.

The first drinks mentioned were alcoholic beverages, specifically beer. Rheumatologist Jennifer Sloane, M.D., told the news source that a recent study estimated that people who drink 12 ounces of beer daily are 1.5 times more likely to develop gout than people who do not. Beer was named the drink most likely to cause gout, but other alcoholic beverages also pose a risk.

“Alcohol causes the kidneys to excrete alcohol instead of excreting uric acid. That increases the amount of uric acid in the blood, which could provoke a gout attack in about one or two days,” David Freeman, MD, told AOL Health.

Sloane also recommended against consuming soft drinks. Studies have shown that drinking just one sugary soft drink a day nearly doubles the risk of developing gout for women. Diet soda was not found to increase the chance of getting the disorder, suggesting a connection between the levels of sugar in a beverage and its likelihood of contributing to gout.

Until more research can be conducted, the rheumatologists recommended avoiding energy drinks due to their high levels of caffeine and fructose.

Are Tomatoes Recommended For Gout

Many sources, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Harvard Health recommend a diet high in colored vegetables and fruits, including nightshades like tomatoes. These foods contain nutrients like carotenoids called beta-cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin, lycopene, and Vitamin C, all of which could help reduce inflammation and improve joint function.

What Did The Research Involve

The research took 12 healthy volunteers and gave them two different volumes of concentrated cherry juice mixed with water, to see what effect this had on measures of uric acid activity and inflammation up to 48 hours later both of which are biological measures indirectly related to gout.

None of the volunteers actually had a history of gout.

In an effort to reduce other dietary sources of anthocyanins , participants were requested to follow a low-polyphenolic diet by avoiding fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee, alcohol, chocolate, cereals, wholemeal bread, grains and spices for 48 hours prior to, and throughout each arm of the trial. Food diaries were completed for 48 hours before, and throughout, the testing phase to assess the diet for compliance.

Participants were required to attend the start of each phase of the study at 9am, following a 10-hour overnight fast to account for diurnal variation. Each phase was comprised of two days supplementation with cherry concentrate. One supplement was taken immediately following a morning blood and urine sample, and a second consumed prior to each evening meal.

Multiple supplements were administered to identify any cumulative effects. The length of the supplementation phase was chosen due to the short period of time in which anthocyanins are metabolised.

Avoid Sweets And Sodas

Unlike fruit with its natural sugar, artificial sugars are widely recognized as gout flare dangers. Consuming too many sugary sodas has been found to provoke attacks, but no association has been found with artificially sweetened sodas. Other foods loaded with high-fructose corn syrup can also bring on gout pain.

An October 2016 systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies published in BMJ Open found a positive correlation between fructose consumption and gout in white health professionals. However, the authors of the study recommended more research to better understand the correlation between fructose and gout.

Another study published in the April 2019 issue of Clinical Nutrition specifically investigating the association between orange juice and gout concluded that the juice did not increase risk of the painful arthritis. The researches further noted that the juice may actually reduce uric acid levels.

However, this was a very small study that included only 26 young, healthy males. Larger, more diverse studies may provide more conclusive answers to the orange juice and gout questions.

How Much Should You Drink

There has not yet been enough research to confirm a recommended amount of cherry juice for gout.

However, according to the Arthritis Foundation, a person might find drinking a glass of cherry juice per day beneficial.

People should talk with a doctor before attempting to treat their gout with cherry juice. The doctor may be able to advise on an ideal amount to consume.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the following strategies to help manage gout:

  • Diet: People should avoid eating foods that may trigger a flare-up. Such foods include those high in purines, including red meat, organ meats, and seafood.
  • Activity: A person can try moderate or low impact activities, such as walking or swimming, to help relieve gout.
  • Weight management: If a person has excess weight or obesity, they might find that reaching a moderate weight can help reduce pressure on their joints and relieve pain.

If a person is experiencing a gout flare-up, they can try the following to help ease the symptoms:

  • Ice: Applying an ice pack to the affected joint can help reduce inflammation.
  • Elevate: Raising the affected joint using a pillow may also help reduce swelling.
  • Hydrate: Drinking plenty of water can help flush uric acid out of the body. The Arthritis Foundation suggests drinking 816 cups of fluids per day, with half or more being water.

I recommend blending 250 ml of frozen strawberries with one half of a frozen banana for a delicious morning smoothie. You may need to thin the smoothie with cherry juice, yogurt, soy or other milk.
