Soft Drinks And Gout Risk

Several studies have found an increased gout risk from sugar-sweetened drinks. This link has been found in both men and women. One large study found that just one sugar-sweetened drink per day doubled a woman’s risk of developing gout compared with women who had less than one sugar-sweetened drink per month. “Studies show that sugar-sweetened drinks and fruit juices are associated with an increased incidence of gout attacks. Interestingly, these studies show that diet soda intake is not related to increased frequency of gout attacks,” says Sloane.

Biggest Health Benefits Were Not From Olive Oil

For example, the large Greek EPIC study investigated which components of the Mediterranean diet were most beneficial and found that monounsaturated fats like olive oil were not stars. Following 23,349 people for 8.5 years, the scientists demonstrated that only 11% of the benefit from a Mediterranean diet came from a high ratio of monounsaturated to saturated fats, and all of the monounsaturated fats were not olive oil. The biggest health benefits came from high vegetable intake, low meat intake, and moderate alcohol consumption.

Similarly, in a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists followed for years the diets and health of 22,043 adults in Greece. Adherence to the traditional Mediterranean diet was assessed by a 10point scale that incorporated the key facets of the diet, including an abundance of plant food , olive oil as the main source of fat, and lowtomoderate amounts of fish and poultry.

Exercise And Diet Can Help Control Nafld

Nearly 1 in 3 American adults has non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, commonly called fatty liver.

Research showed that people suffering from NAFLD who exercised for at least 150 minutes a week were able to reverse many of the metabolic risks associated with NAFLD.

NAFLD is characterized by belly fat, insulin resistance, and high levels of liver enzymes. Research has found that a wide range of conditions can increase the risk of fatty liver disease, including high cholesterol levels, high triglycerides, gastric bypass surgery, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. NAFLD can lead to life-threatening conditions like liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver.

Research in the journal Hepatology* showed that people suffering from NAFLD who exercised for at least 150 minutes a week over the course of three months cut their liver enzyme levels, shed some belly fat, improved their LDL cholesterol levels, and were less insulin resistant, even though they had not lost significant amounts of weight overall.

Most fundamentally, olive oil, like all oils and fats, are a concentrated source of calories. With over 4,000 calories per pound, olive oil is far more calorie dense than even pure refined sugar, which has 1,725 calories per pound. Because of its extremely high calorie density, adding olive oil to any food or meal will dramatically increase its calorie density.

Can We Stop Worrying About Msg And Focus On The Real Problem Which Is Salt

Just as disturbing as the astronomically high percentage of Americans who will suffer from hypertension as a result of their excess intake of salt is the extremely limited amount of publicity that this epidemic is receiving. Food companies and the media are largely silent about the dangers posed by the thousands of milligrams of added salt jammed into the food we eat on a daily basis. They instead focus on phantom dangers such as the flavor additive MSG, which Pritikin nutritionists have for years pointed out has few, if any, of the supposedly life-threatening side effects it has been purported to have.

MSG, a flavor enhancer often used in Asian-style dishes, was said to cause a variety of health problems such as shortness of breath, asthma, and numbness in limbs. However, extensive research on MSG conducted over the past few decades has shown that a connection between MSG and these health issues does not exist.6,7,8,9,10

In fact, MSG is derived from the most common amino acid in the human body, glutamate, which occurs in all natural foods. Furthermore, the sodium in MSG has been proven to be much less dangerous than sodium in salt . If food manufacturers used MSG instead of salt to season foods, we could cut sodium levels in soups, salad dressings, sauces, and other chronically high-sodium products by 75%, and largely prevent the development of hypertension.

Fight Or Flight Response

Anger and other negative emotions like hostility, resentment, anxiety, and worry can also harm the heart by triggering hormonal and other physiological changes in the body. Known as the Fight or Flight Response, these changes elevate our heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, metabolism, and muscle tension, and release glucose to increase energy.

If you need to fight tigers or flee from muggers, the Fight or Flight Response is perfect, just what we need for emergency situations.

But many of us are in an almost constant state of Fight or Flight. Thats because angry, fearful, and anxious thoughts elicit the same changes in our bodies that actions, like escaping from a burning building, would.

To illustrate: Try to recall something that made you really angry.

Now close your eyes.

For a minute or two, imagine that angry event as vividly as possible, and notice how your body feels.

Has your breathing changed? Whats happened to your heart rate? Most of us feel sensations that are very different from how we felt just moments ago. Were being attacked, not by a mugger, but by our angry thoughts. Regardless of the origin of stress, our bodies rev up for emergency action.

Want Dry Cereal Period

Preventing Gout with a Healthy Diet

All right. Just make sure youre choosing varieties, like shredded wheat and puffed whole grain . A shopping tip: Scan the ingredient list. The fewer the ingredients, the better. Shredded wheat, for example, has just one ingredient shredded whole wheat, which means youre not getting all the added sodium and sugar that a lot of dry cereals contain. Yes, you want shredded wheat, not frosted shredded wheat.

Make your dry cereal better for your waistline by pouring less of it in your bowl and filling half your bowl with lots of fruit. The fruit fills you up and keeps you from eating too much of the calorie-concentrated cereal. And be sure to choose nonfat dairy milk or soymilk as a topper.

Heres another tip from another Pritikin member. He was responding to a member who said that oatmeal made her gag. If you cook up a batch of Chef Anthonys Oatmeal Supreme on Saturday morning, youll never say oatmeal makes you gag again. I hated oatmeal myself, and now its my favorite. Both a great breakfast and weight loss are happening.

Quantity Vs Quality Of Hdl

Whats critical, then, is not the absolute amount of HDL cholesterol in your blood but how efficiently the HDL particles you have are removing excess cholesterol from your artery walls and trucking it back to your liver for disposal.

If you have a high HDL cholesterol level, but it is not functioning properly at reverse cholesterol transport because your diet is too high in fat, that high number may look good on your lab report, but your arteries may still be clogging up, warns Gomer.

Ultimately, we must ask: What happens to people after years and years? Who actually ends up with less heart disease? In every study, the rural Asians yes, the people with the low HDL levels win. Every time, the rural Asians beat out populations, like those of Crete, Greece, and Italy, with higher HDLs.

Keep Track Of Your Hydration Levels

A good way to know that youre hydrating properly is by checking the color of your urine. If its pale yellow , youre well hydrated. If its darker , drink more.

But do be aware that some medications and supplements alter the color of urine, so this gauge, while good for many, does not work for everyone. To be safe, do drink the recommended 8 to 10 ounces of water for every 20 minutes of activity.

For Stroke Prevention Eat Fish Baked Or Broiled

Fish is great for your health, but not fried fish or fish sandwiches, points out research.

A key take-away for many guests at the Pritikin Center is that they can make big changes in their health with only small tweaks to their diet. Food preparation or one ingredient can add considerable salt and fat to your diet. Simply substituting baked fish for fried fish could help prevent a stroke.

When people take diet drugs, they dont always eat healthy, notes Pritikins Director of Nutrition Kimberly Gomer, MS, RD. As a result, key markers of good overall health, like lowering of blood pressure and cholesterol levels, dont necessarily happen. By contrast, with the Pritikin Program, which incorporates healthy eating and daily exercise, youre shedding weight and improving your health and longevity, which ultimately improves your quality of life.

Forget Fast Food Dine Unrefined

  • Fast food restaurants are part feed lots and part salt licks. Two large orders of fries and two regular soft drinks provide enough calories to sustain a 135-pound person for an entire day without eating anything else. Of course, no one exists on just two orders of fries and two soft drinks in a typical day, which is exactly why 135-pound Americans are an endangered species.

Tip #2next Ask Yourself: What Happened

Mary Jo D is obviously not going to stop visiting her mother, but its possible she can work her way around the situation so that those gorgeous cookies are not in her face every day.

First of all, does she have to enter her mother assisted living home through the main door? Is there a side or back entrance that doesnt force her to see those cookies?

Another strategy: Is there a different time of day that she can visit her mother? Mary Jo is walking into the foyer at the worst time of day, right after the cookies are out of the oven and right when theyre sitting all plump and pretty on their platter. Just an hour or two later, and the scene of the crime might be very different. The aromas gone. The platters empty. The cookies have disappeared. And so has the awful, nagging temptation.

People tend to slip for different reasons. Which of the following might be the Achilles heel behind your cookie binge?

If you can identify your weak moments, you can plan a strategy for handling the situation better the next time.

Can you avoid it ?

Example: Dont keep cookies in the pantry. Stock your kitchen with healthy snacks like popcorn and fresh fruit instead. Or, can you manage it in a better way? For instance, at the next holiday party, position yourself far, far away from the buffet table.

Personality Secrets For Living To 100

Live long and well, just like Battista. Find out how.

and

Battista Locatelli shares his secrets for longevity and living to 100. As you can see, he’s not just living, he’s living well!

So far this year, Battista Locatelli has charged up nine mountains and back.

On his last expedition, a rigorous trail in Zion National Park, Utah, Battista was a big surprise to many of the hikers on the route. He was laughing, singing, and chatting every one up in Italian, German, and French, and leaving people one-quarter his age in the dust, marvels Battistas son-in-law and fellow hiker, Todd.

Mamma mia! Eighty-year-old Battista Locatelli in Zion National Park, Utah.

Even more surprising, this gregarious octogenarian has a history of heart disease. Ten years ago, he endured quadruple bypass surgery and a 30-day stay in the hospital due to complications.

But today, this owner of a popular Las Vegas restaurant named Battistas Hole In the Wall is going strong, and loving life. With typical enthusiasm, he told Pritikin Perspective, I got up this morning, I felt like King Kong. I could climb the Empire State Building and grab that little airplane and fling it down, and say, Arrivederci! Battistas days often begin with lifting weights, walking six miles, and flying his own plane all before 6:30 am breakfast.

Tips For The Perfect Chicken Burger

Gout Diet Dos & Don’ts
5 Healthy, Juicy Tips for Perfect Chicken Burgers

You want to avoid artery-clogging saturated fat, but sometimes you’re just craving a burger. A chicken burger is a good option, but they’re often dry and tasteless. No more! Here are tips and recipes for the perfect chicken burger.

  • Mix veggies into your chicken patties, as we do with our Pritikin Chicken Veggie Burgers. The vegetables are naturally high in water and will add moisture and texture to your burger, says Pritikin Executive Chef Vincent Della Polla.
  • Add even more juice by tucking fresh, crunchy vegetables into your whole-wheat, low-sodium hamburger buns or pita breads, such as sliced red onions, chopped Romaine lettuce, and sliced tomatoes.
  • If youre making our Chicken Veggie Burgers, leave out the bread crumbs for maximum juiciness. The bread will soak up some of the moisture, especially if you dont follow careful cooking techniques explains Chef Vincent. The patties will hold together perfectly well without the bread crumbs.
  • To make sure the ground chicken youre using is truly lean, low in saturated fat, and healthy choose 99% fat free ground chicken breast.

    Bring On The Bison Meat

Love red meat but trying to curtail your saturated fat intake?

Fans of bison meat say it has a sweet, rich flavor. We have plenty of fans right here at the Pritikin Longevity Center + Spa, where guests enjoy grass-fed, free-range bison entrees every Thursday night.

Of course, dont go overboard. One bison dish a week is the max, especially if youre trying to improve your cholesterol profile.

Pritikin recommendations for all animal protein foods are the following:

    • No more than one serving of animal protein per day. Fish and mollusks are preferable over crustaceans and lean white meat poultry. Crustaceans and lean poultry are preferable over lean red meat. A serving is about 3½ ounces cooked or the size of a deck of cards.
    • Optimally, limit crustaceans and poultry to no more than one serving per week and red meat to no more than one serving per month. If you prefer red meat weekly, substitute free-range, grass-fed bison in place of poultry.

You can buy grass-fed, free-range bison at many grocery stores across the United States, especially upscale, health-food-style chains like Whole Foods and Wild Oats, and online at sites like High Plains Bison.

Cooking Tip: Do keep in mind that bison meat, because its much lower in fat than cow meat, should generally NOT be cooked like cow meat. To avoid drying out your bison, cook it slowly and on low heat.

    Bittersweet Alternatives To Sugar

    Is Oats Good For Gout

Experts have warned against too much fructose , but artificial sweeteners pose their own health risks. Although more research is needed, many experts and sufferers with gout believe that man-made sugar substitutes like sucralose may be just as troublesome for uric acid levels in the body.

The problem may be that artificial sweeteners are acidic and generally acidic foods like coffee, vinegar and fizzy drinks are more dangerous for sufferers with gout. Moreover, these chemical sweeteners are known to clash with normal metabolic processes, and since the build-up of uric acid is a metabolic issue, its important to steer clear of anything that interferes with your bodys ability to break down and filter compounds and toxins.

Does Drinking Sparkling Water Cause Gas And Bloating

Some patients find carbonated water improves their digestion and reduces indigestion. For some people, though, excessive intake can induce gas and bloating, making them uncomfortable. Patients with acid reflux, gastroesophgeal reflux disease , or gas who are drinking mostly carbonated water should switch to non-carbonated beverages, like plain water. More studies are needed on the impact on people with acid reflux, GERD and heartburn, because sugar can really impact GERD. Using straws to drink carbonated water can increase gas and bloating.
