Increased Caffeine Intake Linked to Recurrent Gout Attacks in Study
“We found that overall, as the number of servings of caffeinated beverages increased, so too did the chance of having recurrent gout attacks,” says Tuhina Neogi, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.
For example, drinking four servings of caffeinated beverages in the previous 24 hours was associated with an 80% increased risk of recurrent gout attacks, compared with having no caffeinated drinks.
Drinking more than six servings of caffeinated beverages in the previous day was associated with a 3.3-fold higher risk of a flare-up, the study of 663 gout patients suggests.
When habitual and occasional caffeine drinkers were looked at separately, the link was only observed in people with gout who typically drink less than two caffeinated beverages a day, Neogi tells WebMD.
“As little as three servings a day could do it for these people,” she says.
“In contrast, in people with gout who usually have two or more caffeinated beverages a day, increasing caffeine intake doesn’t appear to raise the risk of gout attacks,” Neogi says.
The findings were presented here at the American College of Rheumatology’s annual meeting.

Tart cherry juice may help decrease uric acid levels and inflammation in gout. Research is limited, with often small numbers of study participants and short-term follow-up.

Coffee Lowers Gout Risk
The new study is based on data from nearly 46,000 male medical professionals enrolled in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. Over 12 years, 757 of these men developed gout, report Hyon K. Choi, MD, DrPH, of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and colleagues.
Because the men filled out detailed diet questionnaires, Choi’s team was able to track the men’s self-reported use of coffee and tea.
They found that the more coffee the men drank, the less likely they were to have gout.
Drinking one to three cups of coffee a day lowered gout risk by only 8%. But drinking four or five cups a day dropped gout risk by 40%. And true coffee addicts — those who drank six cups a day or more — had nearly a 60% lower risk of gout.
Caffeine, whether from coffee, tea, or both, was not related to gout risk. Tea, it turned out, did not decrease gout risk.
But decaffeinated coffee did have an effect, although it wasn’t as large as the effect of the high-test brew. Men who drank one to three cups of decaf had a 33% lower risk of gout. Those who drank four cups of decaf a day — or more — had only a 27% lower gout risk.
Coffee For Gout: The Evidence
One study conducted for over for a span of 12 years proved that those who drink coffee age 40, on a regular basis had a lower risk on the development of gout. This particular study also suggests that the more coffee a person drinks, the more decrease in the reduction of the risk of gout attack.
Moreover, those who drink more than 5 cups of coffee every day has appeared to have the lower of all the risk. In the actual fact, drinking 1-3 cups every day may lower the gout risk by about 8%. The gout risk is at about 40% lower for those who drink 4-5 cups every day, and 59% lower for those who drink 6 or more cups.

Dont forget that coffee has the capacity to elevate the blood sugar levels, and make them harder to control in diabetes. If you are diabetic, you should be very wary in taking it. It may also cause an elevation in the blood pressure level and the heart rate to people who have hypertension or even heart disease. You must also talk to your doctor first before increasing the consumption of caffeine, especially if you are experiencing some medical conditions.

Some people, however, are unable to consume such high amounts of coffee. To be fair, the specific mechanism by which coffee can protect you from gout is unknown.
