    What Can I Do To Help Myself

    Gout is a curable condition and there is a lot that you can do to help yourself. If you have been prescribed tablets to lower the level of uric acid in your blood, you should continue to take these tablets because if you stop or forget to take them, an attack of gout is likely. The lower the level of uric acid in your blood, the lower your risk of gout attacks and joint damage.

    If you can reduce the level of uric acid in your blood by changing your lifestyle, you may be able to reduce the number of gout attacks that you have and may reduce your need for medicines. There are lots of ways that you can help reduce the level of uric acid in your blood for example by reducing your alcohol intake, especially beer, by keeping to a healthy weight and by eating a healthier diet.

    I dont know whether I actually have Gout or some similar condition and am looking for a little guidance in relation to how soon/long Uric Acid remains raised after drinking beer.

    I do suffer from weakened kidneys which, along with my fairly appalling diet which includes beer/steak, has resulted in my being diagnosed with high uric acid. The most recent test I had was 9.5.

    Symptom-wise, I have stiff joints which seem wors on days after I have had a few beers. The kidney complication isnt helping but I have changed my diet significantly and have removed almost all red meat and only have 2-3 beers once a week now.

    So, reading comments in here I am guessing I do not actually have Gout YET but I do have what could possibly be considered the beginning of it, I don’t know.

    I bought a Uric Acid tester and was somewhat surprised to get three readings of 14.6, 14.8 and 15.2. I only realized afterwards that doing an afternoon test likely isn’t wise and I should do so in the morning prior to eating/drinking.

    So to my question…it is Boxing Day and I have been bad for the last TWO days. How soon after an indulgence will it cause a spike in Uric Acid and more to the point how long do I need to wait before a test will settle down and NOT include those two bad days….a week, two weeks?

    Many thanks for any input. Reading the horror stories on here in terms of gout attacks I want to do what I can to prevent experiencing even one.

    Alcohol consumption has been shown to trigger attacks of gout. In a 2-year study conducted in the United Kingdom, 550 participants self-reported the triggers of their most recent gout attacks. The findings from the study showed that alcohol consumption was responsible for about 1 in 7 attacks of recurrent gout.9 This was significantly higher than other self-reported triggers of gout, such as dehydration and consumption of red-meat or sea-food .

    In an even larger study conducted in New Zealand that involved over 2,000 men and women with gout, alcohol was the self-reported trigger of almost half of all gout attacks.10 A study conducted in an outpatient gout clinic in China reported similar findings, with over 60% of the patients that presented with attacks of gout reporting alcohol consumption prior to the attack.11

    Each gout patient is different, so its hard to determine what the safe limit for alcohol is. Its best to monitor your alcohol consumption and limit yourself to amounts that work best for you.

    Lifestyle is an important factor for living with gout along with diet, medical condition, family history, age, and sex. If you find that beer is a common trigger for you, consider lowering your dose to minimize instances of gout attacks.

    If taking alcohol out of your lifestyle is not an option, you should still lower it to avoid those crippling gout attacks. Thankfully, there are medications now that can help prevent and treat gout symptoms. Aside from maintaining a rigid diet low in purines, you should also be taking gout medications such as allopurinol.

    Make sure to speak with your doctor about taking medications while drinking alcohol.

    There is no hard evidence to prove that alcohol reduces the efficacy of allopurinol, but its still best to get the proper dosage to help you achieve low enough uric acid levels. If you still cannot lower your uric acid levels, then you may need to make drastic lifestyle changes such as cutting out alcohol altogether.

    During a gout flare up, you should be avoiding alcohol as it could make it worse. Your gout is already experiencing a buildup of uric acid crystals. By drinking alcohol, you are only adding to the buildup and overworking your kidneys resulting in kidney stones and lumps under the skin.

    A) The lumps on your finger joints are called Heberdens nodes and usually affect the joints closest to the ends of the fingers . Heberdens nodes are caused by growth of bony spurs from the joint surface called osteophytes. They can happen when a joint is affected by osteoarthritis.

    Heberdens nodes arent caused by an excess of calcium and vitamin D. Supplements of calcium and vitamin D are usually used to help keep the bones strong and prevent fractures, but if youre not clear why you’re taking these supplements it’d be a good idea to ask your GP or pharmacist for help in making a decision about whether or not it would be beneficial for you to keep taking them.
