  • Two four-ounce glasses of wine daily was not associated with a higher risk of gout

However, other research has found a link between wine consumption and gout risk. A study published in the American Journal of Medicine in 2014 looked at how much alcohol consumed over a 24-hour period was associated with a recurring gout attack. It found that all types of alcoholic beverages, including wine, were associated with an increased risk for recurrent gout attacks. Even though one drink didnt raise the subjects risk for a gout attack by that much, having one to two drinks in a 24-hour period was associated with a 36 percent higher risk of recurrent gout attack, compared with those who had consumed no alcohol in that time period.

Soft Drinks And Gout Risk

Several studies have found an increased gout risk from sugar-sweetened drinks. This link has been found in both men and women. One large study found that just one sugar-sweetened drink per day doubled a woman’s risk of developing gout compared with women who had less than one sugar-sweetened drink per month. “Studies show that sugar-sweetened drinks and fruit juices are associated with an increased incidence of gout attacks. Interestingly, these studies show that diet soda intake is not related to increased frequency of gout attacks,” says Sloane.

Coffee creamers arent bad for gout. However, there isnt any evidence to prove whether it does any good or not.

People like to add creamers or sugar to their drinks for a better taste. So its a very common practice in many diets.

Creamers generally contain water, sugar, micellar casein, flavorings, cellulose gel, and other carbohydrates. Among these, micellar casein is a milk derivative and you may know that milk supports the elimination of uric acid.

However, creamer isnt a pure source of milk so the potential benefits might not be profound as for milk. You can add creamer whatsoever in your coffee which may enhance the flavoring.

Also, creamers are generally full of trans fat and sugar so try to control the serving size. Remember, coffee works the best when drank in a simple form with the least additives.

Coffee And Gout Prevention

A 2007 study investigated the potential link between coffee intake and gout risk among nearly 46,000 men. The authors found that men who drank four to five cups of coffee a day had a 40 percent lower relative risk of gout compared to men who werent coffee drinkers. Decaf coffee also modestly lowered gout risk, but tea didnt have any effect, suggesting that something other than caffeine is responsible for the effect on gout.

There is a theory that a component of coffee, chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant, may actually be the reason that coffee is associated with a lower incidence of gout, explains Elinor Mody, MD, director of the Womens Orthopedic and Joint Disease Program at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston.

Chlorogenic acid and other antioxidants help reduce blood levels of the hormone, insulin. Levels of insulin and uric acid are closely related. When insulin levels are low, uric acid tends to be lower, too. To illustrate the connection, another 2007 study by the same authors found that people who drank several cups of coffee a day had lower uric acid levels.

What Is The Evidence On Coffee And Gout

Using Tart Cherry Juice For Gout

Tart cherry juice may help decrease uric acid levels and inflammation in gout. Research is limited, with often small numbers of study participants and short-term follow-up.

Nevertheless, a 2019 review of six studies that looked at the effect of cherry juice or cherry extract intake on gout concluded that cherry intake was associated with a reduced risk of gout attacks. Researchers did note that larger, more long-term studies are needed to clarify this association.

It is believed that coffee and tea consumption may affect uric acid levels but only one study has been conducted to date. A new large-scale study published in the June 2007 issue of Arthritis Care & Research examined the relationship between coffee, tea, caffeine intake, and uric acid levels and found that coffee consumption is associated with lower uric acid levels but that this appears to be due to components other than caffeine.

    Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world more than 50 percent of Americans drink it at the average rate of 2 cups per day.
