Consumption of diet soft drinks does not seem to be associated with an increased risk of gout . Sugar-sweetened soft drinks in increasing amounts are associated with higher odds of hyperuricemia .
Eat Foods With Less Purines
Purines are chemicals that are naturally produced by your body and are also found in certain foods. Animal purines from meat and seafood can especially affect your uric acid level.
“Most people eat more than they think,” says Dr. Monya De, an internist in Los Angeles.
The following foods contain high amounts of purine, so those seeking to lower their uric acid level should avoid or limit eating them:
- Organ meat like liver or kidneys
- Shellfish and oily fish such as anchovies and tuna
- Some vegetables, including asparagus, mushrooms, and spinach
On the other hand, the following foods contain low amounts of purine, so eating them won’t increase your uric acid level:
- Nuts and peanut butter
- Low-fat or nonfat dairy products including cheese, milk, and yogurt
- Cherries and other fruits
Following a healthy diet can also help lower your uric acid levels. For example, a 2016 study published in the American College of Rheumatology journal Arthritis & Rheumatology found that following the DASH diet for 30 days helped people with prehypertension and hypertension lower their uric acid level by as much as 1.3 mg/dL.
Is It Safe To Consume 6 Cups Of Coffee Per A Day
Is coffee bad for uric acid? Of course not, as I have already explained. As a matter of fact, coffee will only decrease the levels of uric acid and therefore reduce the risk of gout. But, in order to get most benefits, you will have to drink 6 cups of this beverage per a day. So, is it safe?
In general, yes, it is. Many people already consume more than 6 cups of coffee per a day and they are fine. However, there are some, potential side effects. You may feel your heart beating faster, you may develop insomnia and you may elevate blood sugar. Luckily, there is a way to avoid all of that. First of all, you will have to make longer pauses between the cups of coffee.
For example, drink one cup of coffee in the morning, another one after 2-3 hours and so on. The next main thing to know is that you must not consume coffee 2-3 hours before going to bed. Chances are high that you may not be able to sleep the entire night. On the other hand, if you have plans for that night, you have to study or to go to work, a cup of coffee is a great way to stay awake all night long.

How Diet Can Affect Gout
Purines are chemical compounds found in some foods and drinks that the body breaks down into uric acid.2 Generally, the body can process the uric acid that results from purine-rich foods and drinks such as meat, seafood and alcoholic beverages.2 In some people, however, consuming foods and drinks with too many purines can raise the uric acid level and increase the risk of gout and gout flares.2
Coffee And Gout Prevention
A 2007 study investigated the potential link between coffee intake and gout risk among nearly 46,000 men. The authors found that men who drank four to five cups of coffee a day had a 40 percent lower relative risk of gout compared to men who werent coffee drinkers. Decaf coffee also modestly lowered gout risk, but tea didnt have any effect, suggesting that something other than caffeine is responsible for the effect on gout.

Over the past several years, research has busted some health myths about coffee. It doesn’t contribute to heart attacks, cancer or reduced bone density all of which have been suspected in the past.
We’ve learned that coffee, in moderation perhaps 1 to 2 cups daily isn’t bad for you. And in some cases, coffee seems to offer health benefits, perhaps the most noteworthy being a reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes.
