  • Take Your Prescription Drugs

If you’ve had a gout attack before, your physician may have prescribed drugs to treat attacks. This may be your first line of defense or you may decide to use them only when NSAIDs fail to relieve your pain.

Prescription medications to treat gout include:

    • Prednisolone oral tablets, which has been shown to work as well as NSAIDs and often doesnt cause the same stomach upset. Prednisolone is a type of corticosteroid and does carry other potential side effects, particularly if it is taken for longer than the recommended 5 days.4
    • Colchicine, which has been shown effective in reducing pain and inflammation if taken in the first 24 hours of an attack. Always follow your physicians instructions regarding dosing to decrease your risk for potential complications and side effects.

Opioid painkillers, such as codeine, hydrocodone, and oxycodone, are not recommended to treat the pain caused by gout.

Treatment For Gout In The Hands Background

Gout can attack any joint in your body. It is created when uric acid builds up in your body and the excess uric acid is converted to urate crystals.

These urate crystals then attach to your joint forming what are known as tophi .

The result is what we know as gouty arthritis or gout. The result of a flare up is likely to be painful redness and swelling. So when we treat a gout flare up, it is typically done by trying to counter the swelling with some form of anti-inflammatory.

    Preventing Future Attacks

After the flare up however, treatment focuses on reducing the build up of uric acid that forms the urate crystals. This can be done by either reducing the amount of uric acid our body produces or speeding up the rate at which our kidneys get rid of it.

Since Gout is ultimately started by the build-up of uric acid, it really is a simple balance equation.

Unfortunately, your hands and fingers will always be a key target for gout as they are one of the cooler parts of the body .

It has long been considered that urate crystals were much more likely to settle on cool joints, where the blood flow is slower and they are further away from your heart.

Given also the very functional use of your hands it is often almost impossible, in a practical sense, to rest your hands. This can make both pain and preventative treatment for gout in the hands rather tricky.

    Exceptions

While we try to look at specific treatment for gout in the hands, it is not always appropriate.

Medication Options For Uric Acid Lowering

It is important to note that whenever starting a uric acid lowering treatment, there is a risk of precipitating a gout flare. A plan should be in place for management if this occurs. This generally can be avoided with the co-administration of prophylactic medications along with the uric acid lowering therapy.

    Probenecid

Probenecid may be given to patients with decreased clearance of uric acid by the kidney and normal renal function. In general its use should be limited to patients under the age of 60. Probenecid acts by inhibiting reabsorption of uric acid in the proximal tubules of the kidney. Starting dose is at 500 mg to 1000 mg daily and increased to 1500 mg to 2000 mg as needed. Occasionally higher doses are needed. Probenecid may precipitate renal stone formation and good oral hydration should be encouraged. Probenecid is contraindicated in patients with renal stones and in patients with urate nephropathy. Probenecid given inappropriately to patients with hyperuricemia due to overproduction of uric acid can cause renal stones and urate nephropathy.

What Are The Causes And Triggers Of Gout In The Ankle

The buildup of uric acid in the body is known as hyperuricemia. Your body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines. These are compounds found in all your cells. You can also find purines in several types of food, especially red meat and some seafood, as well as alcohol and some sugar-sweetened drinks.

Usually, uric acid passes through your kidneys, which help to eliminate extra uric acid in your urine. But sometimes theres too much uric acid for your kidneys to handle. In other cases, the kidneys cant process a typical amount of uric acid due to an underlying condition.

As a result, more uric acid circulates throughout your body, ending up in your ankle as uric acid crystals.

4 percent of adults in the United States. It tends to be more common in men because women usually have lower levels of uric acid. But after menopause, women start to have higher uric acid levels. As a result, women tend to develop gout at an older age than men do.

Experts arent sure why some people produce more uric acid or have trouble processing it. But theres evidence that the condition is often genetic.

Other things that may increase your risk of developing gout include:

    • consuming a lot of high-purine foods
    • consuming foods and drinks, especially alcohol, that increase uric acid production
    • being overweight

    Effective Medical Treatment For Gout

The American College of Rheumatology released gout management guidelines in 2012 and updated them in 2020. They recommend drugs classified as urate-lowering therapy for those who have experienced two or more gout attacks in a year as well as for those with joint damage from gout.

Specifically, the organization recommends allopurinol as a first-line treatment for all gout patients, even those with chronic kidney disease. Next in line is febuxostat both are a class of drugs called xanthine oxidase inhibitors.

In addition, the guidelines recommend use of anti-inflammatory medications including NSAIDs, prednisone, or colchicine along with the other medication.

acute gout treatment and a weird trick for gout pain relief!!

    Exercise

This is one point that I think most bland advice sites written by authors who pay a clinician to approve it get horribly wrong. Exercise is always listed as a cure-all without any recognition that certain exercises are better than others for different areas.

In the case of gout, you need to avoid trauma. Now trauma doesnt mean injury just constant impact causes tiny trauma that can attract gout. If you often suffer gout in your feet, then the last thing you want to do is go out running during your recovery.

Running is great for certain diseases/ activites, but not gout. Cycling is better if you enjoy cardio-based workouts, but swimming is best of all.

    Reducing pressure

The lack of pressure/ weight on your feet, makes swimming a perfect treatment for gout in the foot.

Rowing also is not advisable due to the pressure on your feet. Likewise, push-ups cause real pressure on your toes unless you touch the floor with your knees rather than your toes .

Sit-ups however, are really good again, especially with your feet in the air. Just dont use a sit up bar or have someone holding your feet down. A standard abdominal crunch with your feet in the air however is a great exercise for feet that might suffer with gout.

Weight training is a bit of a mixed bag dead lifting may cause gout in your feet because your feet are taking the pressure, while a lot of new shoulder/ arm lifting machines involve sitting and so taking the pressure off your feet are fine.

Celery is a food traditionally used to treat urinary issues. For gout, extract and seeds of the vegetable have become popular home remedies.

Experimental use is well-documented, though scientific research is scant. Its thought that celery may reduce inflammation.

Adequate celery amounts for treating gout arent documented. Try eating celery many times per day, especially raw celery sticks, juice, extract, or seeds.

Gout can cause sudden and severe joint pain, and the worst thing about it is it comes in attacks that last five to seven days. Its difficult to predict a gout attack but there are plenty of changes you can make to your lifestyle that can prevent or reduce further attacks. Exercise is one of these things, but you have to be careful in your choice of activity. Express.co.uk reveals the four best exercises for gout.

List of Useful Home Remedies for Gout

Engage in a moderate form of exercise that does not push your body too much but keeps it active enough to avoid unnecessary weight gain. As gout can render your joints achy and feeble, subjecting them to a rigorous workout will only add to the strain and will worsen your condition.

Ask your doctor to recommend exercises that are appropriate for your condition.
