Can energy drinks cause liver damage?

“Professor Nicola Dalbeth shares an update on the management of gout. Nicola is a rheumatologist at the University of Auckland and Auckland District Health Board. She is a founding member of the Mori Gout Action Group, chair of the Atlas of Health Care Variance Gout Expert Advisory Group and was clinical lead advisor for the gout clinical pathways and bpac gout treatment guidelines.”

Slowing The Aging Process

Because the human life span is so much longer than that of laboratory animals, scientists wont know for many years probably a generation or more as to whether a reduced-calorie diet will actually slow the aging process and help us live years, maybe decades, longer.

But the new study from Washington University certainly suggests that calorie cutting can enhance the health of the years we do live by reducing the risk of cardiovascular-related ills like heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes.

And because 40% of Americans die of these diseases, it only makes sense that preventing their occurrence would increase many peoples life expectancies, reasons Dr. Jay Kenney, Nutrition Research Specialist at the Pritikin Longevity Center®.

If calorie-reducing diets worked in humans as they have in animals, people who now live into their 80s might very well live until age 110 or beyond, predict scientists.

Who Is At Risk Of Getting Gout

High uric acid levels are caused by the following factors:

  • Genetics some Mori and Pasifika people have genes that make it harder to get rid of uric acid from their bodies.
  • Being overweight carrying extra weight slows down the removal of uric acid by your kidneys.
  • Increasing age in about 90% of cases, gout affects men aged over 40 years and women after menopause.
  • What you eat and drink you increase your risk if you drink a lot of sugary drinks or alcohol, or eat too much food that is rich in purines, such as liver, meat or seafood.
  • Having high blood pressure .
  • Taking certain medicines, such as water or fluid tablets for high blood pressure or heart failure. Read more about medicines that increase uric acid levels.
  • Existing kidney problems and some other conditions.

In people with known gout, there are changes you can make to reduce the risk of developing gout.

Tip: Ask your doctor whether you need to change any medications you take for other health problems.

Normal Weight And Pre

What the physicians and other educators at Pritikin have found is that many normal-weight kids, like 13-year-old Sarah who was recently at Pritikin, are not normal within.

Sarahs blood glucose revealed she was pre-diabetic. Her insulin was more than double normal levels. Though competing on her school track team helped keep her thin, it wasnt enough to fight the damage her daily diet of fast food, Cokes, and candy bars was doing to her blood sugar.

Prepare For The Stressful Situation

Ask yourself, What do I have to do to stick to the Pritikin Eating Plan?

Tell yourself, I can make a plan to deal with this challenging situation.

Develop the plan and write it down. For example, take an index card and write what youll eat during the cocktail hour, the main course, and at dessert time. Bring the card with you. Dont make decisions at the party! Your decisions were already made at home, when you were calm, rational, and not experiencing the stress of unhealthy temptations that lead you away from your healthy goals.

Practice positive but rational self-talk: You might say to yourself:

  • This could be a tough situation, but I have a plan and I can handle it.
  • Im going to the party to celebrate the holidays with friends and family, and this, not food, is the reason for this party.
  • I may be tempted, but thats natural. Ill just practice some relaxing breaths, and wait for the urge to pass.

Why Are More People Going To Weight Loss Resorts For Vacation

In 2010, the CDC estimated that nearly 35% of all U.S adults are obese and medical costs associated with obesity hit a staggering $147 Billion. In contrast, a recent Gallup survey concluded that as many as 3 in 10 adults are trying to lose weight through diet and exercise. Its no mystery that Americans are becoming more conscious about their weight and taking determined action to do something about it. While weight loss resorts, in general, have yet to go thoroughly mainstream, an increasing number of Americans are embracing lifestyle change as a means to lose weight. Weight loss retreats are the perfect opportunity to catalyze lifestyle change and learn the healthy behaviors necessary to lose weight and keep it off.

Healthy Diet: An Alternative To Medication

A recent meta-analysis from Emory University of more than 23,000 participants also affirmed the blood-pressure-lowering benefits of a healthy diet.

The scientists compared several diets. They found that the one with the greatest overall reduction in blood pressure was the diet similar to the Pritikin Eating Plan DASH. The magnitude of this diets blood pressure reductions, the authors wrote, is similar to trials examining single drug therapies in mild hypertension, indicating that this diet may be an alternative to medication initiation in early stage hypertension.

How Is Gout Diagnosed

Does Alcohol Cause Gout? – Uric Acid & Alcohol Addiction Explained

Gout can be diagnosed by clinical history and exam or by analyzing fluid taken from a joint for crystals. This is commonly done with a traditional polarized light microscope. Here at UCLA, we are developing a new lens-free polarized microscope to improve detection of gout and pseudogout crystals.

Gout can also be diagnosed by ultrasound or a specialized gout CT scan . Both Ultrasound and DECT are available at UCLA.

How To Live A Longer Life: Get Up Stand Up

For a longer, better life, your morning workout sure does count.

Yes, you can get abs from losing weight through a safe and consistent exercise plan and a healthy eating strategy. However, perhaps youd benefit most from making a shift in your mindset.

Back in the 1990s at the Pritikin Longevity Center, we all thought that one of our educators, Dr. Bill McCarthy, had gone a little overboard.

At meetings, hed pop up from his chair every 20 minutes and circle the room for a minute or two. In his office, hed talk on the phone while standing or strolling around. Its how to live a longer life, hed smile while taking a peek at his pedometer, always attached to his size 32 belt.

Simply getting out of your chair every half hour or so and strolling around for a couple of minutes can reap big benefits.

We loved Bill, but wondered: Really? Isnt his 45 minutes on the treadmill every morning enough?

Today a growing body of research is revealing that Bill was right. Its not a good thing to sit for long periods of time, even if weve put in a good sweat every morning in the gym.

That was the conclusion of a study of 240, 819 American adults, ages 50 to 71, published earlier this year in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition1. Following these subjects for eight years, scientists found that those who sat seven or more hours a day watching TV were much more likely to get sick or die than those who watched just an hour of TV a day.

Quack Nutritionist Is Yours

Whom can you trust for reliable dietary advice? Who’s a quack nutritionist? Learn the five red flags that will help you avoid the fakes.

Yes, you can get abs from losing weight through a safe and consistent exercise plan and a healthy eating strategy. However, perhaps youd benefit most from making a shift in your mindset.

In most states you dont even need a license to call yourself a nutritionist, which means that anyone, including people with little or no formal education or training, can set up shop as a nutritionist, warns Dr. Kenney. It really is a case of buyer beware.

There are huge risks, and not just to your wallet. A quack nutritionist may blame a symptom of a serious health problem on the lack of some nutrient and try to sell you a bunch of supplements to correct it. In some cases, time spent fiddling around with such cockamamie cures delays legitimate treatment, allowing a disease to progress to the point where it may do permanent damage to your body.

So whom can you trust for reliable nutrition advice? Always rely on the most qualified professionals in the field of food and nutrition. They are called registered dietitians , like the registered dietitians at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami.

Bring On The Bison Meat

Love red meat but trying to curtail your saturated fat intake?

Yes, you can get abs from losing weight through a safe and consistent exercise plan and a healthy eating strategy. However, perhaps youd benefit most from making a shift in your mindset.

Fans of bison meat say it has a sweet, rich flavor. We have plenty of fans right here at the Pritikin Longevity Center + Spa, where guests enjoy grass-fed, free-range bison entrees every Thursday night.

Of course, dont go overboard. One bison dish a week is the max, especially if youre trying to improve your cholesterol profile.

Pritikin recommendations for all animal protein foods are the following:

  • No more than one serving of animal protein per day. Fish and mollusks are preferable over crustaceans and lean white meat poultry. Crustaceans and lean poultry are preferable over lean red meat. A serving is about 3½ ounces cooked or the size of a deck of cards.
  • Optimally, limit crustaceans and poultry to no more than one serving per week and red meat to no more than one serving per month. If you prefer red meat weekly, substitute free-range, grass-fed bison in place of poultry.

You can buy grass-fed, free-range bison at many grocery stores across the United States, especially upscale, health-food-style chains like Whole Foods and Wild Oats, and online at sites like High Plains Bison.

You Can Boost Energy Without Risking The Dangers Of Energy Drinks

Research shows that caffeine offers some mental benefits such as better focus and sustained attention, faster reaction speed, and enhanced memory. But you dont need to use energy drinks to obtain these benefits.

One study suggests that three to four cups of coffee per day can provide caffeine benefits as well as the antioxidant and anticancer benefits of coffee.

But its important to remember that your bodys source of energy is food, not caffeine. There are other foods, such as green tea and wheatgrass, that provide long sustaining and healthy energy reserves. Another way to improve your energy level is by using vitamin and mineral supplements.

The American Heart Association recommends avoiding energy drinks if you have high blood pressure or a heart condition. If you continue using energy drinks, keep in mind that youre doing so for their taste and not for any type of specific health benefit. Most manufacturers recommend that you consume them slowly and that you do not use more than two in a 24-hour period.

Does Energy Drinks Cause Kidney Stones Relation Between Kidney Stone And Energy Drinks

Mayo clinics have already declared that there can be various causes behind kidney stones. Basically, it forms when urine contains crystal in a bulk amount consisting of uric acid calcium oxalate, etc. when all these components increase in the amount in urine fluid, then it makes urine thinner and remaining components form stone.

Oppositely you may have a lack of substances in urine that avoid crystals and stop their groups from sticking together. Undoubtedly sticky group of crystals may form a bigger/shorter stone.

The majority of stones are made of calcium oxalate due to metabolic conditions. However, high sugar levels, high blood pressure, and raised cholesterol levels are fundamental causes of developing another type of kidney stone by calcium phosphate.

Fast Food And Childhood Obesity

Foods That Cause Gout | These Foods Can Cause Uric Acid | & Are Purine Rich Foods | Gout
The restaurant industry may say that fast food and childhood obesity have nothing in common, but a vast study shows how strong the link is.

Yes, you can get abs from losing weight through a safe and consistent exercise plan and a healthy eating strategy. However, perhaps youd benefit most from making a shift in your mindset.

Fast food and childhood obesity

Theres more disheartening news. On any given day, children who eat fast foods burgers, fries, shakes, and the like take in an average 187 more calories than kids who do not eat fast foods. These extra calories could translate into an additional six pounds of weight gain in a year, estimates the studys lead author Dr. Shanthy A. Bowman of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, Maryland.

The study, published in Pediatrics, was based on dietary intake data from 6,212 kids and teens living across the United States, part of the USDA Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals, 1994-1996, and the Supplemental Childrens Survey, 1998.

Overall, notes Dr. Bowman and co-authors, from Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School, children who ate fast food consumed more total calories, more calories per gram of food, more fat, more added sugars, and more sugar-sweetened drinks than other children. The fast-food eaters also consumed less fiber, less milk, fewer fruits, and fewer vegetables.

But, Dr. Brownell writes, mounting science is making such statements harder and harder to defend.

More Whole Grains Less Belly Fat

Want a flatter, leaner tummy?

Bring on the whole grains! Helping you shed belly fat is just one benefit of whole grains. A meal like this whole-grain bulgar salad with fresh fruit, corn, and veggies can also help you fend off heart disease…and stay deliciously full.

Studying 50 obese men and women, scientists at Pennsylvania State University put all 50 subjects on a calorie-reducing diet for 12 weeks, but divided them into two groups. Half were instructed to eat whole grains. The other half were told to choose refined, processed grains, like white-flour foods.

At the Pritikin Center, guests can learn their fat-to-muscle ratio via DXA System Body Composition Scanning. Two weeks later, a second scan reveals how powerful Pritikin living is in shedding fat and building muscle.

After 12 weeks, average weight loss for both groups was about the same: 8 to 11 pounds. But the whole-grain group showed significantly greater reductions in the percentage of fat around the middle, the researchers reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Thats great news not only for a svelte tummy but also for health. Numerous studies published over the past two decades have found that belly fat is particularly harmful to our hearts and overall health. Abdominal fat is one of the characteristics of a now-epidemic condition in the U.S. called the metabolic syndrome, which is a collection of several risk factors for diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Take A Stroll After Dinner

We all know that eating out, even when were being Pritikin perfect, will likely ratchet up more calories than eating at home. So mitigate the damage a little. Take an evening walk after dinner. Enjoy the night air. Window shop. Find some good kick-up-your-heels music.

It doesnt have to be an hour-long, break-out-in-a-sweat walk. Weve found among our Pritikin guests with diabetes that their morning blood sugar levels often look significantly better if theyd gone out for an easy-to-moderate 20-minute walk after dinner, says Danine Fruge, MD, Associate Medical Director at Pritikin. Chances are, similar benefits would hold true for nondiabetics.
